American Rodsmiths

I bought one last summer and had to swap it 3 times at Acadamy. The ceramic inserts in the line guides were very fragile and prone to chipping. It seemed like the ceramic would fail/chip when the line (mono) came under tension and put some load on the insert.

Fish strikes, pulls drag. Insert is damaged. Watch a sliver of line peel off as it passes through the chipped guide. Flip rod over to get line away from chip. Try fighting fish on reduced diameter mono.............

I liked the blanks but not the eyes. Eventually swapped it for a Penn.

Ditto on what Steve said. I had a guy fishing with me once with a new american rod and 4/0 and one of the eye's cracked and tore his line-up. This was a new rod with only a few small snapper caught when the eye cracked.

There's a lot better rods out there.

The ones I am looking at have the black aftco roller guides on them and removable aftco but. If you look on their we site they will make you the rod with a warranty on it and ship it to you. 80lb class for $129. I wanted the chaos rod but they dont want to wrap it in blue to match my new avet 50w's. The next thing close in price is the cape fear MOW series w/o rollers and they start at $300. www.americanrodsmiths.com Not argueing with you but if the guides are the only prob you have had then this might work with the rollers, you think? At least until I can drop the $500+ on the cape fears that I REALLY want with roller tip/striper. BTW the avet is a beautiful real. I think I am in love, it has become my newborn child. I cradled it to work with me yesterday to show off my baby....lol. my wife made fun of me. :)

They are sharp looking but thats about all "I'm speaking of the white blank ones". Their heavy, and the action is horrable and they just feel cheap while playing a fish. I like my all star gulfstreams alot better.

The rollers look like a run of the mill aftco roller on Eglass black blank I have only used penn and ugly stick rods in the past but I dont like the ugly stick but. I like the action and the fact it is light and the guides are good but the butt of it is foam. penn is alright but they are not pretty compared to everything else unless you get the penn international rods, then they have gold trim.

before you spend the money to have cape fear make those rods for you contact a custom builder. you will get exactly the rod that you want for probably cheaper than what you can buy it from cape fear directly. you get to pick the guides that you get and probably inspect the rods along the way. I know of one custom builder in san antonio that does nice work, thats bimini rods I am not sure of where they are at I have only seen them at shows and I have seen some people that have bought rods from them on the dock. but really do yourself a favor you will get exactly what you want and will probably save some money too.

which cape fear rod? i have 4 or 5 of the 50/80 stand ups. some with all rollers and some with stripper and tip but all in the blue water series. fish them more on the heavy side of there rating and you will be happier with their action. the avet would match the blue water wraps very well and would make a very pretty rig that could handle some huge fish....rick

That is what I was looking at actually mcgolfer with the stripper and tip. I have fished them before with spinners combo finnor. My friend has many cape fears due to his sponsorship but unfortunatly he found out that if he orders a new one he has to send the old one back for inspection and they only sell them wholesale to them in quantities of 10. Ramon, cape fear is actually exactly what I want but is just so dang expensive that I have to grit my teeth a while to drop that kind of cash on them but if you dont mind can you give me any more info on the bimini rods?

Argo,

The Chaos rods made in Florida are competitively priced and have great customer service according to several people I visit and fish with. I have met the guys from Chaos at the Houston shows. They are very helpful.

I do not own one. But as soon as I start moving up to the Internationals I am sure that is the rod I will look at first.

You have to ask yourself why we are talking about rods on a Sunday afternoon in June!! Shouldn't we be fishing? Isn't this a discussion for February?!!

I emailed bimini and he starts at $450, I would rather get the crowder for $200 or chaos. Crowder has blue wraps though so they might win out even though they are $30 more. Their website says they have them at roys, can anyone from corpus confirm that. I am thinking of heading offshore on wed-thurs this week so I might go by on the way down wed and check them babies out.
