Well I just got finished putting a rod dryer togetrher. Nothing fancy, but functional. All I have to do now is to build a chuck for it. For those of you thinking of buying one DON"T. They run about $60.00 or so plus shipping. Mine isn't pretty but it cost me around $10.00 bucks or so and about 15 minutes of my time. I am gonna try to add pics.

Well I have not had any luck getting my finishes to come out even hand turning them. So I figured what the heck it's cheap enough to build one myself.

OK cool

I think I have that area covered. I got a sewing machine and an old vari speed drill that I plan to use. I have a few more little things to pickup and then I will build the rod holder with roller guides. If everything stays on track by the end of next week I should have my first rod completed.

I need some plans for the chuck myself. I saw one on rodbuilders.com but it was a small pic and did not have the details on how he made it. I am going to play around with some of my software and see what I can come up with, I think the hard part will be trying to figure out just how to attach it to my motor.

You can go several different ways on the chuck. First you could buy a very nice three jaw from Mudhole for around $25.00. What I am gonna use is a PVC pipe cap and put thumb screws around the outside to hold the rod in place. As far as attaching to the motor you can buy little sleeves that have set screws in them. The little motor I have has a 1/4" shaft so what I will do there is to drill a 1/4" hole in the center of my pipe cap stick a 1/4" bolt through it put it into the coupling then I am ready to roll. I will try to find a pic of the coupling I am talking about and post it. I also thought about using a small Lovejoy coupling according to the cost.

Thanks JJ. Yeah I am with you, I can't believe that they are so expensive to buy. When they are so simple and cheap to build. You can get the little gear motor from www.allelectronics.com for like $2.50 plus shipping wich is $6.00 I think. The thing to keep in mind when building a dryer is that you want it to turn very slow. The motor I have is a 40rpm motor. Most of the dryers you can buy are 15rpm or 30rpm.

Ok here are a couple of pics of the type of coupling I was talking about. The silver one is $4.09 from WW Grainger, and the black one is like $8.00. Either would work just fine. They come in various bore sizes.

I tried that but it was a pain to put the rod in with out the finish sagging. I just clamped a piece of rubber over the cap and cut a small hole in the center. Now I can just turn on the motor, push the blank in, and walk away.

If you are just going to use it for drying, you can use a 7/32 or 15/64 bit and just press the cap on the shaft. I did and it works fine.

Thanks for the compliment JJ.Glad ya like it. It was really cheap and easy to build. I am about to get started on my wrapping jig. It will be a little more complex and expensive but nowhere near what one is to buy. I am gonna use inline skate wheels for the rollers on it and my mom's old sewing machine will probably wind up donating its motor and foot pedal ( much to my wifes dislike, lol). If you need anymore pics let me know and I will email them to you. "Git-R-Done"

That looks great

I was also thinking about roller blade skates and using the wheels as rollers. My daughter has a pair just sitting in the donation box ready to go for drop off, they just might have to disapear..LOL
BTW, does your wife ever give you "the LOOK"?? Every time I start some project I get the look. I'm starting to collect quite a few items and almost ready to "work away", last night, I got the LOOK.
She has learned to accept all the computers, printers, monitors and stuff related because that's how I make money. I asked her about that, you know, I said "What?" when she gave me the look, she said, "You have all kinds of fishing stuff and now you are making something to make more fishing stuff". It was hard for me to just smile and not bust out.

Boy do I know " The LOOK". Everytime I go to buy or build something I get "The LOOK" followed by " don't you think you have enough junk". This is when I answer first of all it ain't junk and second NO I DON"T. Oh well she puts up with me. Oh the one thing about used in-line skates is make sure you clean the wheels really well so you don't put any scratches on your rods. I was in Wal-Mart today and they had replacement sets clearanced out for $11 for 8 wheels. I will watch um when they go down a bit I'll snagem.
