Replacing treble with single

971 Views 13 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  habanerojooz
So I was going to replace a few treble hooks on some top waters with singles, but wanted a little more advice.
I have seen some leave the treble on the back and just replace the front one. When should I do this? Just larger top waters?

Do I compare the replacement hook gap with gap of 2 hooks on treble to match size? Ever a time it’s ok to go smaller? Bigger?

Thanks in advance

A single is a lot easier to remove.

Below is info on what size of single hook to use when changing out treble hooks on topwaters. I believe this info is from a 2008 (?) article by Mike McBride in the Texas Saltwater Fishing Magazine.

I know treble hooks can be a pain in so many ways, but I’d never go to a single hook on a top water. If you have fished a top much you know you get a lot of hooks on the side of the mouth and face of fish. Hook ups you wouldn’t get with a single hook. Just part of fishing with a top.

single hooks are typically used for fishing with surface grass, something upper coast fishermen never see, otherwise trebles are the ticket.

That chart is nice and never saw anything about the bigger in front smaller in back.
I agree on the pain of trebles and more hook ups, but I needed to change several out and so thought I would try it.
the single on one and treble on other seemed like a good 50/50 mix. I SUCK at top waters and want to fish with them more, but hang the line on the front hook sometimes and the single is supposed to help with that.
Idk, one of those things that you think about doing and so seeing pros, cons, and stuff like the chart.
All my top water baits have singles hooks. I have missed a few fish but I still prefer single hooks.

first, before you fish with that bait you changed hooks on, test the swimming action of the lure. Most lures are manufactured to swim a specific way and hook weights/types can really change that.

I use braid with a 20lb mono leader, if I tie braid directly to my topwater it tangles every cast.

Not sure who mentioned that first, (maybe even you on different post a while back) but I started doing that as well. FG knot with about 5’ leader.

i use a loop knot for top waters, but I can still tangle it! I can pretty much do what can’t be done so I need all the help I can get haha

I fish tops with 30lb 8 strand braid with very little issues. I do make long punching casts with a baitcaster. Maybe making loopier casts with a spinning rod or something could cause them to have issues every cast? I may have a topwater come back in fouled about 1 out of 30 casts.

I also started switching to single hooks once I had to have a treble pulled out of my thumb. Was wading and a small trout got the front hooks on my SS jr. The back hook was loose and I was trying toget the trout unhooked when he flipped a bit and that treble went deep in the side of my thumb. I catch/have caught many trout over my lifetime on topwaters. If a single hook causes me to miss a few, I like the trout to win from time to time anyway. :) I'll get em on the next cast/trip.

I generally put 2/0 inline hooks in a large topwater and 1/0 inline hooks on a smaller profile topwater. Putting the inline hooks on, avoids the need to add another split ring. Also, if you have fat fingers like me, use some diagonal cutters and cut those old trebles off instead of trying to remove them through the split ring. IMHO, It's not worth a few cents to save that hook, once you get those other treble points into your fingertips a few times etc. Also, most factory hooks aren't something I am usually impressed with anyway.

What brand single hook are you using? I purchased gamatsu (misspelled probably) 2/0, but I read somewhere that they can be smaller or bigger than other 2/0. All manufacturers do not measure the same. The above chart showed a 3/0 and so I was wondering if maybe they were too small for a full size SS or top dog… jr’s I think they are good and smaller mirrodines I would think I need 1/0.
Is 2/0 a good size for Corky?
I am using VMC inline single coastal black hooks when replacing. I bought packs of 1/0, and 2/0, and I am just comparing them to the size hooks on the bait already, to see which one looks right. So far so good with these.

Here’s an example of size variances in VMC 1/0 hooks of different strengths, plus an Owner 2/0 hook that is similar in size.
