Silly question,
but can you change out the LED side markers lights (Red and yellow) on your boat trailer to just put reflectors so that you don't have to run wires to that area?

Look at Transportation Code Sec. 547.352

TxDOT said:
Sec. 547.352. ADDITIONAL LIGHTING EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS. In addition to other equipment required by this chapter:

(1) a bus, truck, trailer, or semitrailer that is at least 80 inches wide shall be equipped with:

(A) two clearance lamps on the front, one at each side;

(B) two clearance lamps on the rear, one at each side;

(C) four side marker lamps, one on each side at or near the front and one on each side at or near the rear;

(D) four reflectors, one on each side at or near the front and one on each side at or near the rear; and

(E) hazard lamps that meet the requirements of Section 547.331

It all depends on size of your boat trailer, which obviously depends on size of your boat. I've been researching boat trailer lights trying to figure out some really good quality ones that don't have to be replaced and I came across this article which covers everything regarding what's required on different size boat trailers. It also talks about what you need to consider to get good quality lights.

The requirements vary depending on if your trailer is:
  • 80 inches or wider
  • Less than 80 inches wide
  • 30 ft long or longer
  • less than 30 ft long

The different lights also serve a purpose - so if you replace a side clearance or side marker light with a reflector you can technically get a ticket for that.
