I believe it has to do with the length and width of your boat or trailer. BUT I’m not 100% sure on that. I do know when trailering I would rather run wires to be seen at night than not. Just my 2cents.

Yup, they are a must for me so I can see the Fenders/pivot point on the trailer at night when turning corners.

 

Look at Transportation Code Sec. 547.352

Sec. 547.352. ADDITIONAL LIGHTING EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS. In addition to other equipment required by this chapter:

(1) a bus, truck, trailer, or semitrailer that is at least 80 inches wide shall be equipped with:

(A) two clearance lamps on the front, one at each side;

(B) two clearance lamps on the rear, one at each side;

(C) four side marker lamps, one on each side at or near the front and one on each side at or near the rear;

(D) four reflectors, one on each side at or near the front and one on each side at or near the rear; and

(E) hazard lamps that meet the requirements of Section 547.331

 

I think removing lights is a bad idea.

Adding reflectors in addition is always a good idea. I use the red/white DOT reflective tape continuous all the way around and across the rear of trailer. And one section on back edge of outboard too.

 

Well dang, my trailer is 80 inches inner fender well to inner fender well.....I guess I have to keep the led lights there......its only a single axle 21 foot boat trailer.

 

It all depends on size of your boat trailer, which obviously depends on size of your boat. The requirements vary depending on if your trailer is:

• 80 inches or wider
• Less than 80 inches wide
• 30 ft long or longer
• less than 30 ft long

The different lights also serve a purpose - so if you replace a side clearance or side marker light with a reflector you can technically get a ticket for that.
