While cleaning out the garden I turned over a board and a small snake about 8 inches long comes running out, he was brown with a definant reddish tinge to him. All one solid color. He was going very fast as I was trying to get a good look at him then I realized he was coming right at me and I was in flip flops. I started dancing and jumping and he was gone. And no - I only kill cockroaches.
Any ideas on what he might have been?

My guess would be:

ROUGH EARTH SNAKE, Viriginia striatula

This is a small, dark brown snake usually less than one foot in length. They like gardens and cultivated soil where they can find their principle diet, earthworms. About the most damage they may cause is a sprained ankle you my encounter running away in your flip flops.

Yes,they are very funny, and love yanking the chain of newbies from time to time. All in good fun I'm sure!!
I looked up the rough earth snake and that is what he looked like, more so than the brown,or the ground. Thank you Fishin Fool.
