If i'm throwin' live/dead bait..i use either a 6 or 8 trebel hook or better yet use a 3/4 circle hook. The circle hooks work better and are easier to release the fish.
Not sure what you are asking about what dept works best/most strikes? Explain please?

Rig

Use a 1/0 or 2/0 wide gap circle hook (Kahle hook) on about 2-3 feet of 20lb leader line under your cork. Use a swivel under the cork to keep the line from twisting too much. I prefer weighted styrofoam corks to the Alameda corks, but that's a personal preference.

ditch the trebles

and use kahle type hooks as mentioned above. trebles kill to many undersize fish. also the circle hooks set themselves, reel down on em and the hook slides to the corner of the mouth and sets itself.

I'm pretty new to all saltwater fishing, wading included. I have done it a few times and absolutely love it. I work in retail, so I never know what days I'm going to have off. But if you ever want to go out wading and I'm not working, I'd be more than happy to partner up. My g/f doesn't like the idea of me wading by myself either, but I try to sneak in the water from time to time when she's not looking. Shoot me a PM sometime if you want to go.

Im with Flatsfats.

I wouldnt use a treble. The only trebles Ill use are on Topwaters and spoons. They cant swallow that. Not that has been a problem. :headknock

Ive been useing those Daiichi blood bait circle hooks. I think the red helps.

right on brother! red helps tons.

I use a 4' section on 20# fluro attached to the main line and the attach an Equilizer brand poppin cork with 1-3' section on 20# flour under that. sometimes use a treble with the soudered point nipped off and sometimes use a kahl hook...just my 2%....JJ

I quit using live bait a couple of years ago, but after my first couple years of fishing I quit using treble hooks period and started using kahle syle hooks as aforementioned in several of the replies already posted to your question. This is sound advice. Trebles are way to much trouble to remove from hooked fish, kill too many undersized fish, and I promise those kahle style hooks will hook just as many fish as trebles. I speak from many years experience. Better yet, hook up with someone that can teach you how to throw plastic the right way and show you just how many quality fish can be caught this way. Tight lines.

For soft plastics all you need are red/white, pumpkin/chartreus, puple/chart, and glow/chart. These colors cover just about any situation dirty to gin clear water and if they aren't hitting these they arent there. If you must have more colors than that some honorable mentions are limetreus, electric chicken, red shad and avacado. It really doesn't matter what brand but when the fish are barley hitting a bait, bass/saltwater assasains work best. Other wise I throw texastackle factory. I like to rig mine on the bass assasain chartreus screw lock heads in either 1/8 or 1/4 ounce. Make sure that you have someone show you how to use the screw locks. You can't fish them wrong just experiment from bouncing it slowly off the bottom to ripping it along almost as fast as you can. Let the fish tell you how to fish it. For rigging them I like to use about a 6 - 12 inch leader of 15lb flouro or 20lb if skipjacks, or spanish mackrel are present attatched to a 20lb spro swivel which is super small. Good luck and try to stick with one bait as long as you possibly can so you can try and build confidence in it. Also if you plan to fish the surf a couple of 1/4 and 1/2 ounce spoons in gold and silver are always a safe bet. Make sure you attatch them with a swivel though.
