I have never used my veterans discount at Lowes before but I have a couple of big purchases to make and thought I'd give it a try. So the last ID I ever had was issued upon discharge I turned in the active duty card and they issued me my inactive reserve card. I ETS'ed in 1996 I have never needed that card. I have been to the VA hospital, had VA loans, gotten my CHL at a discount etc. and have always used a copy of my DD214. As a matter of fact many times this is the only form of proof they would except. So I grabbed my dd214 and off to Lowes I go. I am ready to make my purchase and ask about the veterans discount and they said sure do you have proof of service? So I hand over my Drivers License and DD214 and the clerk say we don't except this you have to have your ID. Now I have looked everywhere for that old faded inactive reserve card but can't find it. I'm sure I put it up for safe keeping and now can't remember where the hell I put it ( not the first time I've done that). So do any of you know what I can do? Can I get a new card thru the VA office?

I think you can get a new card at the VA hospital.

the other thing you can do is take your DD214 down to a TXDPS drivers license office and they'll reissue your DL with "VETERAN" on it - Lowe's should take that as well.

as far as not accepting a DD214, maybe escalating to a manager would have helped because that IS proof of service.

DD-214 is our proof of service
didn't know we could get "veteran" on our Driver's License - KEWL
I have my VA card from the VA hospital. since I have disability mine says "Service Connected"
I have a Metro (bus) photo ID card that says disabled vet. I get to ride for 1/2 fare
what I don't like about using my DD-214 is it has my SS# on it.

btw- when they handed you your DD-214 you were told to take it to the courthouse in the county of your permanent residency when you got home. they will "record" it for free and then mail it back to you. if you ever loose your original or it gets burned up in a fire you can get a "certified" copy from the courthouse

I was told it was for Ative Duty and Retired Military (20 Yrs) both are issued ID cards. I show mine and its never an issue. From thier website it does include Veterens (Receiving VA Benifits) but its specific on the type of ID, except for three holidays when a DD-214 Works.

Lowe's established the 10% Military Discount to support the men and women who are currently serving our country in the Armed Services1 and to honor Retired Veterans and VA Recipients.2 This 10% discount is also extended to the immediate family3 of those who are currently serving, Retired Veterans, or VA Recipients.
To qualify for the Everyday 10% Military Discount, you must:
Be currently serving in, or retired from, a qualifying branch of the Armed Services, or be the immediate family member of someone who is and have a valid military ID Card.
Or:
Be a veteran who receives VA benefits and have a valid Veteran Identification Card (VIC).
We honor all Veterans on three specific holidays: Memorial Day, 4th of July and Veterans Day. During these three holiday weekends, we extend the discount to all veterans who served honorably and who present a valid Form DD214 or other proof of service. The Lowe's Military Discount is extended to the Veteran community on these three holidays only.
The Military Discount must be used on personal purchases only and cannot be used for Lowes.com purchases, previous sales, or the purchase of gift cards or services including product installations. It cannot be combined with the Lowe's Price Guarantee, or promotions such as "Spend and Get," "New Mover," "Project Starter," "Your Choice," or discounts such as Quote Support Program (QSP) quotes.

WOW when I went to Lowe's and asked for my discount I asked what kind of proof they needed and the clerk said none and rang me up with my 10% discount. All I had on me was my VA hospital card but she said she didn't need it.

Wow the way that reads if I didn't retire or get wounded. Lowes does not consider me a vet. I thought the day I held up my right hand and gave my oath. I was writing a blank check for up to and including my life. Some of us get those checks cashed and some don't. Sounds like Lowe's is taking credit for for giving veterans discounts but their interpretation of veterans is very different than mine.

If you fought in Vietnam, Iraq or Afghanistan and didn't get wounded or chose not to take disability. Sorry your only a veteran on the holidays?

I appreciate any business that takes the steps to recognize service but something seems a little off the level to me about this.

I have been told by several people that Lowes give all veterans 10%... not true!

I was curious. According to what I found some DD214's (short form) do not include type of separation. So a guy who got a dishonorable discharge could get the discount. Unfortunately, I am sure that it has happened.

You just happened to find a dumba$$ clerk. I use my VA ID card all the time at Home Depot and Lowe's. No problem. Ask to talk to a manager next time if you get the same run around.

You can take a copy of your DD214 to Houston VA Hospital (or any other VA location) and get your pic taken for a VA ID card. Them you won't have a problem. You DO NOT have to have a duty related disability to get the ID card.

Just join VFW show your card I use it all the time
Same here... or an American Legion card. McCoy's (small towns) has it in their system in case you get a newbie that doesn't personally know you...

If some dumba55 doesn't recognize a DD-214, tell them to get their manager.

  • 1 Armed Services - US Army, US Navy, US Air Force, US Marine Corps, US Coast Guard, or the National Guard and who are in active, reserve, or retired status.
  • 2 Retired Veterans and VA Recipients - Veterans who have retired after 20 years of service and/or those who receive VA Benefits
  • 3 Immediate Family - Spouses and/or dependent children (up to 18 years old.)

The quick and easy thru Lowe's, use the VA ID.
They will take the dd214. Like one said, call the manager if the associate doesn't play with you.

Get that VA ID by dropping by your nearest Office and ask, what is needed on your part beyond the dd214 to get a VA ID, just takes a few minutes if they aren't backed up as a Monday morning. Even if you are categorized in the last slot for any VA benefits. The VIC is owed to you, you earned a Honorable DC.

As retired USAF, it saddens me when this happens to veterans who served proudly but did not actually retire - you're still a vet. So I have a retiree card I can present however for those who separated where you don't get a card I would ask to speak to a manager - a valid ID like Tx DL and a DD214 should be more than sufficient to prove military service (i.e. Vet)

Oh yeah, you get 10% at Lowe's and HD anytime, not just on holidays.

Also for "disabled" vets, you can present your VA disability rating paperwork along with DL/ID at any State and National park entrances to get lifetime access passes. Picked up he national park pass up at the PINS gate and they were super - when they saw my DV tags, they asked me if I had my DD214 paperwork so they could give me a pass. Very cool.. As for state, any state park entrance with an actual office like Enchanted Rock, Lost Maples, Brazos Bend, etc. can usually assist.

And most importantly, thanks to all who have served, continue to serve and help support this great land - no matter how long or short your time in uniform was.
