I'm headed to Port Isabel/S. Padre next Friday, June 9th with the family. We're staying in a townhome with a dock on the bay side of South Padre. My Dad and I will be fishing with a guide on Tuesday and Thursday, but he will also have his boat down for the week. We'll make it out on our own once or twice between visits to the beach with the kiddos. Are there any good spots close to Port Isabel/South Padre? Dad's boat is an antique wooden fishing boat and he doesn't like to put too many miles on it...

Boat Pictures

Okay folks. Here's some shots of the boat we'll be fishing out of at South Padre next week. Built in La Marque, TX by Central Boat Works. It is a 1957 Lamar that Dad bought for $350 in Tomball when I was 8 or 10 (1984). Topside was restored by Mr. Holmes in Houston 5 years ago. Outboard has about 5 hours on a Stone & Son rebuild. Dad, Uncle Doug and I have laid a layer of biaxial kevlar/carbon fiber weave over the hull with West System Epoxy. Turned out nice (and bullet proof), but she's still a fishing boat. "No Fin Fancy" is her name. Note the original live well in the right rear? Dad brought me up fishing Chocolate Bayou, Offatts Bayou, and West Bay out of this boat. We've made tons of great memories and are looking to make more in South Padre!

Draft is real shallow and we'll be cautious. I'd hate to try to find another lower unit! Also, if you know of a good place to take the kids crabbing let us know!

Thanks again for the advice on where to fish! Be sure to say hi if you see us!

You may want to run the ICW up toward the Arroyo, once you get to the houses, anchor off the channel and free shrimp the dropoff, DOA's and other lures work pretty good too.

Drift the grass just north and west of the convention center. Two to three foot deep in that area and holds some trout and reds. Shouldn't have any problems with that rig.

I'd fish the channel off the island under the lights. This time of year you can drift the channel from the convention center to boardwalk and catch fish. Free shrip under the lights on a good tide.
