We're headed down to Port A this Thursday and I'd like to find some state water snapper. Does anyone ever catch catch any keeper's at the published spots inside of state waters this time of year? I was thinking of trying Lone Star Reef, Boatmans, and the J&J Wreck since thats all the spots I have within 9 miles of shore. Any advice would really be appreciated. I can't wait till Rik's new book comes out!!!

My advise would be go way south or north, every thing that is close to port a has been fished hard. Look on your maps for structure between port a and port o'conner, or head south past packery. This will be your best bet to finding keeper snapper. I fished some spots north last week and found keeper snapper no sows though. Hope this helps.

Never had much luck on Boatmans or Lonestar. JJ Wreck has deteriorated some over time and is difficult to find if you don't mark fish. I think of the three, JJ might be your best bet be near Port A. We always load up and head south when we make a state snapper run. It's a haul but you can load up the box in hurry.

going out of packery how far do you want to run south ?
I wouldn't mind going 30 miles or so staying in state waters if I had some reliable numbers to go to. The only map I have to look at right now is Garmin Mapsource and it doesn't show much of anything inside 9 miles headed south. I'll take a look at Hilton's, etc when I get down to the boat tomorrow.

Is there a decent ramp to launch from if I trailer down to Packery?

Boat ramp ...

There is a nice and very convenient ramp just this side of the jetties at Packery. You can see it from the highway when heading to Port A.

It's on the Port A side of the channel.
