pee stream question

Working on a Yamaha 175 SHO. Had a Bobs Low Water pick-up installed by Bobs installed recently and now it takes 45 seconds to begin peeing (before it was 5-10 seconds). Sometimes I burb the idle a bit to speed things up but its a little disconcerting, Other than the delay it works great. I even pulled the lower unit off to check the new impeller and it looks fine. All is well but is that normal for a Bobs Low Water pick-up? Thank you very much.

Yeah they were super nice. Said it takes longer because there is a longer passage way to the impeller. He did not seem worried, but I was. I would visualize my new impeller melting waiting for water. I Just wanted to see if anyone had a similar experience. I've gotten used to it, and as I said I dropped the lower unit and opened the impeller housing to check it and it looked fine.
Just make sure the cavitation plate is underwater before you start the engine. Once the water is flowing you can raise it up

Aside from that delay have you had any issues picking up grass with it or it getting stopped up with mud?
Hope you have a temp/water pressure gauges to monitor. Nose cones with low water pick up is designed for high performance boats, not so much for shallow water boats plowing through mud. You did lose the screens that stop some of the mud and grass getting to the water pump.
I have the same motor with a low water pick up, it starts peeing within 5 / 10 seconds. The only time it takes more the 15 seconds is if i was in some mud. I found out through the pressure gauge that if I run in a slalom pattern it really cleans the water system very well. Maybe one of the 2cool brain trust can tell why my water pressure gauge shots up high when running in a continuous S pattern.

What type of low water pick up do you have?

I'm not sure what brand or modifications were made byt it was installed at Bernie's in Victoria. I've tried a few different things over the last few years but whatever they did is by far working best.

Visualize where the water pump is and start the motor with it under the water line. This will help it prime and allow the water to be pushed not start off sucking water, which water pumps and impellers were not designed to do.
I have an SHO and asked my mechanic the same question today. The water pump is located directly above the line where the lower unit is mounted to the outboard. If you have that line below the water when you start the motor, it primes it fine. If not, like when jacked up high, it is sucking a lot more air in than water, so it cannot prime it as well.

After having a 2 stroke for years, he told me that it is very normal for a SHO to have more of a gurgling trickle from the exhaust stream when underway at high RPMs. Lower RPMs will be a full stream once the system is primed.

Yeah I talked to Mac. He said he's only done up to a 90 horse. Said he would have to play with a Yam 200LB and see if 2 of them (on one each side) would do the trick. I'm sure he could figure it out.
Dude is good. And is a fish magnet. Won some money with him in my boat more than once.

Other than waiting on pee stream, no grass or mud, its pretty fantastic. Nose cone has six holes in the front so it works well. I'm not saying it cant happen. I wouldn't want to be running in 5" and get an alarm going off. Yes, at the ramp burying the motor deep in the water offers the least restriction, in 12" of water however its a balance of deep, but not in the mud. Before, the motor was mounted middle hole and I never used jack plate deeper than 2. I got the Bobs low water and I raised motor to the top hole and now motor is about 1.5" higher on a Majek Illusion. I prefer to jump up with the jack plate at 3.5 or 4, once up I have enough range to lift the prop up so that it is essentially above the bottom of the hull, if necessary. Normally keep it at about 3-4 up on a Bobs jack plate. All the way up on 5-6 it continues to have good pressure and skeg is now even with the bottom of hull, it'll run in 4-5" get up in 12-14. I guess I'll swap out a pump annually. thanks for the input.

I hear ya. I moved my motor up to the top set of holes on my Illusion too. Fortunately I can still run on plane with the jack plate in 6 and it still picks up water. Crazy cause half the prop is out of the water. But I know the smallest amount of grass would shut me down. I tried a set of Shallow Skoops but they make it harder to pick up water at idle speeds.

I just make sure my tow insurance is kept up lol.
Get a modified water pump impeller from Evans Marine or I can make you one. It will pump water much faster than the stock Yamaha impeller.

Thanks for the plug buddy!

This. My modified impeller setup on the Yamaha I ran was a huge improvement. Smack will set you up.
