Anyone feeding this?

This is my first year on my current lease. I established my feeders in April but am not feeding protein. So far I have only met a couple of guys on the lease other than the lease manager. Feeding protein is not mandatory and I have no idea who, if any, are currently feeding protein. I plan to set up some protein feeders at the end of the season.

Anyway, I was considering switching to a roasted soybean and corn mix to add a little protein to the diet. After talking to another guy, he suggested feeding a green pea and corn mix. Supposedly, the peas left on the ground will germinate with good rain and create a browse food source as well.

Anyone have any experience or opinions on the pea/corn mix?

We feed a 70/30 corn soybean mix and the deer love it. I believe it would replace protein feeders altogether. With the above ratio you get your protein around 18% which is optimal for deer

For every 300 lbs we mix 250 lbs of corn/bean and 50 lbs of milo. Makes for a good food sorce for everybody

I fed roasted soybeans/corn last year during the drought and had more activity at my feeders than ever. Could just have been the fact that native forage took such a big hit. i about went broke though keeping feeders filled at $19.00/50# for the soybeans.

One thing for sure with a spin cast feeder, your ***** are gonna get massive!
I used spin type feeders and there was nothing left on the ground a couple of hours past spin times if that tells you anything.

A regular spinner is ok.

I wouldn't recommend straight soybeans as the crude protein is higher than a deer can absorb. A soybean has the be roasted to get to the 23% protein unroasted will not work.

Protein wise corn has a crude protein around 8% and the number a deer can absorb is 18%

The peas will work in a reular broadcast spin feeder.

I buy my corn at Mumme's in Hondo. I called them up and the pea/corn mix is $11.25 per 50# bad with a 50/50 mix. They don't carry roasted soybean, so this makes my decision a little easier.

According to the guy I spoke to, the peas are food grade grade raw peas with 22% protein. Obviously, the deer won't get as much out of since it's not available on demand, but I figure every little bit helps, especially with the doe needing to support the fawn.

No one has any experience with the peas?

My feeling is that all we fed with the split peas were the birds. I hunt in river bottom so it is gumbo dirt. If dry under the feeder, there are mud balls due to hogs when dry. From sitting in the stand, when I threw peas mixed with corn, after the deer or hogs, then ***** finished, the peas were still there. Then had lots of different kinds of birds topick out the peas.

I have heard that Roasted Soybeans do not have the same attraction as peas to birds. I don't know!!!!

How does some of yall mix corn and soybean and say then the mixture is now 18% and the deer can absorb it. I dont care how much corn you mix with whaatever you mix it with such as soybean the beans are still gonna be whatever their % is. it wont change that..

We are repeating what the sellers are saying. Guess I will have to ask the biologist with TPWL for the answer. I do know Ryan has been known to drop in every so often to see what is being said. Beau
