'Indian Larry' Said Killed at Bike Show

CONCORD, N.C. - A custom motorcycle builder known for his appearances on
cable's Discovery Channel died Monday at a hospital of head injuries
suffered during a stunt, officials said.
"Indian Larry" fell off a motorcycle Saturday while performing before 8,000
people at an arena outside Charlotte. He was not wearing a helmet, the
officials said.
Indian Larry was standing on the moving bike when it began to wobble and
went out of control, said Mike Downs, Cabarrus County deputy manager. His
full name was not immediately known.
"Indian Larry was a man with great skill and talent as a mechanic and metal
sculptor," said Robert Freeman, chairman of the county board of
commissioners. "He will be truly missed by his fans here in Cabarrus County
and throughout the nation."
Indian Larry, who appeared in movies and television shows, was featured on a
Discovery Channel series in which motorcycle builders design and build bikes
from scratch, then have them judged by motorcycle aficionados.

What a tragedy (and I don't even know who "Indian Larry" is).
I'll never understand why people don't wear helmets when on motorcycles, but then I don't understand why they blow by me at over 85mph on the Dallas North Tollway popping wheelies either.
I think whoever invented the motorbike was a strong proponent of Darwin's theory of natural selection.

I understand that this guy was an artist with a welding machine and all, but now he could qualify for a Darwin Award. He was standing on a moving motorcycle without a helmet right before he died...
He will be missed.

As far as not wearing a helmet. I used to race Motocross. You wouldnt catch me on a bike without one. But these guys live, and die by a different code than us. Its about freedom, and its impossible to explain it to regular citizens.

From my old Harley war days I hate to see people riding motorcycles wearing shorts and tennis shoes. This is one of the biggest mistakes you can make riding a bike. If you've ridden much in your lifetime you know exactly what I mean. Motorcycles aren't meant to be ridden in garb that you'd wear to a softball game.
Indian Larry wouldn't have been caught dead on a ride with shorts and tennis shoes, you can bet the farm on that. There's a lot of us that hate helmets too but thats just one of them things. Godspeed Larry.

It amazed me that, despite his appearance, Indian Larry was the nicest, friendliest, most humble and helpful guy out of all the builders on the show. He was an awesome guy. When he beat another guy at one of the biker build offs, he cut the trophy in half and gave the other half to the other builder.
What's up with the Helmet? The law states you must wear a seatbelt for your safety but not a Helmet. Why?

The folks that don't wear helmets will argue that they can see and hear better. Personally, I don't ride without a full coverage DOT approved helmet, steel toe leather boots and long jeans. I sure as heck wouldn't be standing on a seat either. But to each their own. He died doing what he loved, and that's more than most of us get to do.

That is what gets me with people that don't want to wear a helmet. They say it is my business, it won't cost you anything if I wreck. Well, if this mandatory $10,000 is the only insurance somebody has that isn't going to go far. That will barely get you an ambulance ride and an IV started. So guess who picks up the rest of the tab? Well, you and I of course.
I know of 2 deaths in Baytown area in past year . Neither guy was wearing a helmet

2nd guy had just got seperated was on a little joy ride. Loaned his helmet to his passenger ( she lived with only minor scraps) He died in the hospital from head trauma
suffered when his head hit the curb .
Personally , you will not catch me riding a motorcycle on a public street in nothing less than a full suit of armour

Different states have different helmet laws. I personally hate wearing helmets. God made our heads the perfect size to go 70+ on a bike with good wind resistance. Put a helmet on and i'd have a neckache and headache quick. But that's just me. I knew if I crashed I was pretty much dead. I do advise people to buckle up, not because it's the law but for safety, it's just reaction for me to grab my seat belt. I'll also advise wearing a helmet. But it sure didn't help my buddy when he got hit head on by a diabetic who passed out. Wiped out 2 out of 5 riders, 4 lane highway, plenty of room, Thomas was up front and never had time to react..... You can't control Accidents...

Last week, when Darrell, Rex and I were going out riding, I had to run to Krogers to get some cash outta the ATM. It's not far from my house to Krogers, but as always, I had all my gear on. I came out of Krogers, mounted up, and was putting on my helmet when a car stopped behind me and a lady got out. She walks around to me and says "thank you". I was kinda stumped and asked "what for?" She just smiled and pointed to the EMS patch on her shirt and said "for wearing your helmet". Seems the EMS has a very high opinion on wearing helmets.
To each his own though.
