I have long wanted to get an external flash for both my point & shoot and my DSLR (Pentax). The Pentax flash I want is $500+ last time I checked. I am considering (for this price) getting one of these and seeing how it does. Any opinions?

Is there any risk to the cameras themselves by using a flash that is not branded for them?

From the looks of things, you have to still use your onboard flash. The Vivitar will detect the flash and fire at the same time. That is why you can mount it on the bracket. I am not sure how that would work out as far as exposure goes.

Direct flash is the worst kind (red eye, harsh shadows, stuff like that). I don't see any way to bounce the flash to help eliminate those problems.

For $16 dollars, I guess it is worth a try. You can always throw it away if you don't like it.
