Hit the Freeport jetties around 7am Saturday morning with just Richard this trip. Decided to take a leisurely trip this time since just the two of us. Headed towards the old Buccaneer field in seas less than 2.6ft. Weather was beautiful for once. Stopped at a weedline around 25 miles out and immediately started catching chickens. Boxed a few and over to another patch. Richard catches a nice 10 pound Bull Dolphin on a drifted sardine. Then we catch a keeper ling that swam up to the boat. A few more schoolies and then we decide to find some snapper. Hit one cut off well head, nada. Hit one rig, drifted all sides, nada. So headed for some dolphin. Boxed a few more and then headed in. Stopped at another weedline at 12 miles and some more chickens. They are definitely everywhere. Stopped at a rig nearby and three line showed up. Tossed an 8 inch chicken we kept previously and the largest ling takes it and before we could get the motors in gear he broke us off in the rig. Caught one more king while drifting and called it a day.

One decent bull dolphin, 10 or so chickens kept, one ling and one kingfish. Pretty good day for a leisurely trip.

Sounds like a good trip did you have to chum up the chickens or were they just there when you pulled up to the weed line? Thanks for the report the Plugger

We started with artificials and then switched to baiting them. If you were lazy (which we were by later in the day), you could toss a little chum and then catch them on small chunks on small hooks. They were literally everywhere and ate everything tossed at them. However, the ling and bigger dolphin seemed to have come in investigating the chum line but ended up taking the bigger drifted baits and not the chunks.

Wish we had boated the bigger ling on the livie. It was a sight to see him hit that live bait... not the normal steady investigation and then soft bite that they make on artificials... three ling were hell bent to take that poor dolphin down and the big one was the winner in a hurry. Big ling 1, Boomer/Richard 0, Dolphin <0.
