Bird doggers run the same risk with rattle snakes. Duck hunters with alligators. Hog Doggers with boars. Cougar trackers with cougars......
The list goes on. Hunting dogs are prone to injury and death every time they get out of the dog box.

I have thought about both sides of the pro and anti wolf argument and feel I could argue either side. Romantically and ideally I am very much for having wolves back in their native environment, they belong there. On the other hand, if I were a rancher losing stock to wolves I would want to defend my herd, yes by killing wolves. BUT, I am prevented by law from doing that. In the past, generations ago, I could just shoot the wolf and be done with it. It is a tough problem. Now, if I were on the side of the ranchers, this is definately the kind of story I would want printed in the newspaper. HMMMM

Note to self: Take a firearm with you if you think your dogs have treed a bear.

Assuming this is all true, I hate to hear of the guy losing so many dogs. There must have been more wolves than he saw to take his hounds out so fast.
