TEMPORARY CLOSURES PLANNED FOR THE
GALVESTON CAUSEWAY

On Sunday morning, July 9, 2006, a test demolition of a single pier foundation will close the Galveston Causeway to north-and southbound traffic for approximately 30 minutes. The test will demonstrate the effectiveness of the traffic control, monitoring and controlled demolition procedures for a series of demolitions to remove the underwater portions of old causeway. The controlled demolition will enable the concrete structure to be removed from the floor of the bay in manageable pieces and the rubble recycled.

All motorists and recreational boaters are encouraged to remain out of the area until after the causeway is reopened to traffic. To avoid potential harm to marine life, trained observers will be stationed near the work zone to alert construction crews of animals wandering into the demolition impact area. All commercial traffic will be halted until the all clear sign is given.

The removal of the concrete piers for the old causeway will require brief scheduled closures of the freeway for the next six months. The original causeway was built in the 1930s and substantially reconstructed in the 1960s. The $135.9 million causeway now under construction will be a completely new facility. Although it shares the same profile as the present structure, the New Galveston Causeway doubles the available roadway.

The next scheduled closure is July 30, 2006, when the bascule bridge support and main span foundations will be demolished. All demolition work is subject to weather permitting.
