We are thinking of trying our luck offshore this weekend while down in POC. How far is the closest rig?
Have 40 gallon gas tank?
Have the wives with us...........
Wanting to get to a rig or a weedline......

Any help out there?

Will be in a 23ft Marshall.

Closest rig is about 10-11 miles. You can see them from cavallo pass but cant see land from them. LOL

I dont have any idea. Tried to fish them one time in my life. Gulf was slick glass like a lake so I went out for the heck of it. Did not catch anything. And when coming back the way I thought I arrived, I ended up way north of the pass and had to come down into the big jetties. Just glad I was heading back to land and not further out. LOL Didnt have gps or compass back then.

Chances are pretty slim you will find any snapper on those rigs. Most of the "surface stuff" gets hit hard down there.

I've been fishing the short rigs the last few weekends with good success. The best rigs have been to the east and the closest one is about 8.5 miles, from there you can "rig hop" to the other wellheads close by. The snapper have been non-existent until you hit 75 foot deep, the closer rigs are in 50-62 feet of water. The snapper I have been getting are mostly undersized with a few small keepers, better chance of catching some kings downcurrent of the rigs/wellheads while bump trolling ribbonfish. Run two rods out, one with a 1.5 ounce weight (100 feet) and the other without weight(150 feet) and troll at slow speed past the side of the rig. After your baits pass the rig downcurrent, take your engine out of gear to allow the baits to sink for a couple of minutes. Kick it back into gear and get ready for the hit.

As for your fuel, 40-gallons should be enough... just run your engine at cruising speed (3800-4200 RPM) for the most range.

There are a bunch of rigs 20 miles due south of Pass Cavallo. I have spearfished most of them and they all have snapper on them. Water depth ranges from 85-100 on those rigs.

I may stop by, but I wont be getting into town until around 10-10:30. I figured most of you guys would try to get to sleep early, I am planning on doing the same.
I plan on stopping by on Sat evening though over at Erics house.
