We just got back from Venezuela after two weeks of fishing, and I've posted the best 38 photos of our camping on the river, on my web site below. One morning we caught 100 bass up to 12 pounds while wading or on the shore, by 8 a.m. It's a Texas wade fisherman's heaven, that's for sure. We didn't have wading shoes, instead went barefoot on sandy bottom, but were untouched by piranhas or freshwater stingrays.

My second folder covers the big bass tournament on Lake Calabozo, where we placed 11th out of 70 boats. I'll post the pictures of that starting tonight or by tomorrow.

You have to click on each photo, to read the caption on what was going on at that moment. Enjoy. I'm certainly going back. Email me, if you want to get hooked up with these Italian friends of mine (born in Venezuela) who have been fishing this river for 30 years. Ideal fishing season is November through January.

I ended up putting the best 138 photos in there, grouped into five subjects. The babes are in Tournament Awards, the various fish including piranha were put in the Pre-fishing folder, and so on.

Hey Joe -

What time of the year is the best time to go? How much was the air fare and how many stops did you make getting there?

Were the natives friendly or did you have to "drop them panties, boy, and squeal like a pig"? How do you say "weeee, weeee" in Venezuelan? Do they speak Spanish or Portuguese?

Oh, it wasn't that bad, no Apalachian hillbillies lurking back in the woods. Maybe an honest guerilla or two. Cheapest flight is straight from Miami, a little under three hours. November through March is the dry season, and all the fish are crammed in the river or oxbow lakes, tearing up the baitfish.
Facts of interest about Venezuela from our friend and driver, as we crossed the country:

>Gas is now 6 cents a gallon.
>No speed limits.
>No driver's license required.
>You can drink and drive.
>If you get a ticket on the highway, you can wipe your butt with it.
>Viagra is over the counter and cost $1 each.
>Boob jobs are $1,600.

On the down-side:
>prisons are few and a convicted murder can get out in as little as two years. But home-owners and their neighbors have guns, and can freely defend against any break-in. If you get an automated cell phone call during the day that your home burglar alarm was activated, you call your friends, lock and load, and go see what the problem is.

>The present government is appropiating some farmland for settlers, whether the land is fallow or just finishing a harvest. Taking it by committee, reading a decree on the farm itself. The other farmers are free to protest and post their videos on Youtube. Some farmers promise to do a lot more than that, if a committee spokesman shows up on their property...

I forgot to mention, you can run all red lights in the cities, they're only there to show an intersection up ahead. The trip was cheap, we slept in tents or hammocks by the pool at a small fishcamp, where they cooked three meals a day. In a national park. Caught most of our fish wading or casting from shore. The guys brought a little Merc outboard, brand new, and that was put on the camp's only jonboat. It ferried some of us to the far shore to wade, while the other guys trolled around in the middle of the oxbow lake. The bass were busting shad like bonito offshore, at mid-day.

Was it expensive?
