you have a choice of tube which you have to replace the tube and cost you $100 to $200 on ebay every 2 to 3 years it akes 3 mintes to change it with a sharpest picture and cost 40% less than lcd . you can have the lcd or plasma which I think lcd is better than plasma overall. search here or read the consumer report . there is a limit how big you can go according to the room size , I don't recall the formula . today tvs can do 1080p but there is no such signal available except on bluray player to watch movie - currently the playstaion game uses the blueray technology and it is best to buy the playstation 3 as it is a better bluray system and you do get to play games also. you can receive hd signal using 1950s technology by adding a antenna sold at frys , get the largest available , I combined two antenna in my attic. when you watch channel 8 , it becomes 3 channel so you have 8-1,8-2,8-3 and last one is Spanish . there are not that many true hd signal available and sometimes they call it hd but it is water down because it is only 480i sinal . 1080i is equal to 720p and I would like to see a 1080p broadcast someday. match price with amazon.com at best buy. I bought mine from sams . number one complain for hd is , they did not buy big enough . there is a limit how big you can go , I am 8ft away from viewing area and 61 inch is perfect . find out ow many 720p or 1080i signal is avilabe and you be amazed that free air anntena is matching it .

Everything I have read gives the overall advantage to plasma over LCD.
plasma is more expensive.
don't know if true, but I have heard that sams will sell "previously owned/refurbished" kinda units. again only a rumor I have heard. Their prices are usually pretty good-but that may explain that. if warrantied-don't know if that would matter.

Actually inch for inch, LCD is more expensive but the gap is closing. I am a plasma fan. I just bought a panasonic 800u. The pictures on plasmas are noticebly superior to lcd.
The down side is that it is possible burn in if an image is left on the screen. Especially with video games. I have never had that problem but the possibility exists. The panasonic has built in burn in defense. With a high def signal the picture is spectacular. Plasmas also produce a better picture than an lcd when receiving a non high def signal. Go plasma, go Panasonic,. You will not be sorry.

i bought 2 tv's LCD 1080 dpi from dell online and saved about 600 dollars. they had a sale back in april. i love them and the picture is Crisp and clear. You might try looking at dell online. IMO if you go lcd, do the 1080, you wont regret it especially if you like sports.

panasonic plasma here also. when I got mine 3 years ago the new generation had just come out on panasonic and pioneer- the 2 leaders. And panasonic was rated the best of the 2 in the several reviews that I looked into. they were also the more expensive ones. prices are much cheaper now-3 yrs later

I thought that overall you would get a brighter image on an LCD vs a Plasma, so if you were to have a high ambient light in the room that you are going to put the TV like a living room with windows that let light in during normal viewing you would be better off with an LCD.
Plasma will give you a better picture in a dark room and worse in a brighter one.
Also if you plan on using that PS3 for gaming it will look better on an LCD unless you crank way up on the contrast and brightness on the Plasma (not reccomended)
If you dont intend to buy a blue ray player and all new movies then the 720p tv will be fine for HD and DVD viewing. I would expect several TV's to go on sale the closer we get to the switch in Feb 09

Boashna is refering to Rear Projection TVs which with two exceptions use incandesant bulbs for a light source. The bulbs are easy to replace when they go out, but when they do you wont have a picture until the bulb is replaced.

The two exceptions I mentioned are Samsung series 7 Projection TV's which use an LED light source which is rated for 25 years continuous use.

We have 2 Panasonic plasma's and an lcd...I hate the lcd but I would run back in a burning house to save my Panasonics! I am a technophile and an audio/video nut who tends to do lots of research. Based on many reviews and color temp. tests and all sorts of mumbo jumbo.....you have a couple of top choices imo 1.Pioneer plasma (the holy grail) or 2.Panasonic plasma (as close as they get to the Pioneer and a lot less moola). Costco has killer prices on Panasonics as well....and don't get weak and buy less than a 50"! Most plasmas have a feature that causes a slight shifting of pixels to prevent burn in so no need to worry. Watch a Blu-Ray movie on a 1080p Panasonic plasma and you will never go to the theater again!
