Hi everyone,

I have tried a bit of surf fishing here and there, but not with much result. I will be staying with my family on the beach in a week or so in Port Aransas at the Seagull. I have thought about fishing the surf in front of there before but haven't tried it. I usually wade/drift the flats.

Can you guys that fish the surf a lot offer some pointers? Things like....

What artificials to throw? Mirrolures? Do soft plastics work well in that environment too? How far out to you have to wade to catch fish most days? Are we talking chest deep where the breakers are over your head or what? Are they ever in the closer guts at sunup? I would like to catch a few, but am not sure how to really go about it. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!!!

In summer months start early with Mirrowlures, 1/2 to 3/4 oz sliver spoon and soft plastics with 1/4 to 3/8 oz jigheads to get baits down. During day fish with double drop rigs using small circle hooks 1/0 with FishBites and pealed fresh dead shrimp for reds, occasional trout and lots of whiting. If you see birds working or bait getting busted get your lure rod out and put a big topwater in it. In evenings hit surf again as sun drops down with soft plastics and topwaters.

I haven't surf fished much in 10 years, but am getting back into it. However, back 10 years ago, we started tossing the lure as soon as our feet got wet, especially in the morning, and pulled amny a trout from the first gut. We'd work out to the second sandbat then, tossing into both guts in front and behind. Look for cuts between the guts and work them well. If there are fish n the surf, they WILL be travelling in the cuts between the guts, especially if you find an elusive cut in the second sandbar that leads to deeper water.

Fish the slopes of the bars where confused and churned-up bait will be rolling down from the shallow whitewater on the bar.

We used to throw Hoagies, the soft shrmptail jigs, I can't imagine the fish wouldn't still bite on them. The ones from Brown Lures are almost identicle except they have little legs. We also thre trout rigs.
