Need Port Mansfield advice!

I am planning a trip to Port Mansfield this summer. I am looking for advice on fishing and boating in the area. I have a Sea Hunt Triton 210 with trolling motor, jackplate and power pole. It drafts approx 15-17" loaded. I will have 2-4 people on the boat at one time.

I am plan on fishing near shore if the weather permits. From what I have seen, red snapper are 3-5 miles out?

I have not fished the Texas coast with my boat. I have gone with a guide once but he was running a flats boat. I do have experience in the FL Keys where we have rented larger boats.

I will attempt to rent a location with a boat slip for approx 10 days.

I plan on hiring a guide within the first couple days to get a feel for the area too.

I am looking for any advice for a good time to go (June-August) and any boating safety suggestions. I usually try to over plan for trips, so any advice this far out helps me get prepared.

Thanks!!

I fish there frequently and exclusively, and in fact just got back from a trip on Sunday. The water is very low right now, but it's winter.....still plenty to navigate in a shallower drafting boat. By summer the water will be quite a bit higher. I don't fish deep sea, but yes, there are snapper spots fairly close to the cut's mouth. June is generally much better than August...trust me. September/October are even better.

You'll be perfectly fine with that boat down there inasmuch as there are tons of places to fish in deeper water. In fact if you head north out of the port, you can easily fish the entire western shoreline up to the land cut. You can also cross the intracoastal and fish anywhere in the eastern half of the bay, but cannot go too close to the island as it gets shallow.

There are also spots to the south, but I don't like fishing down there at all. Depending on tides, you'd probably have issues fishing west bay and Peytons but still have other options.

August is going to be your calmest time of the year, but it can get steamy down there if there isn't a breeze. Like others have said, there are plenty of good places you can fish out of that boat, especially that time of year. East cut, pipeline, saucer, king ranch shoreline, weather separator. The biomass of fish are going to be in 3.5'-4' of water. Drift the edge of the grasslines that are about that deep and you will catch fish. You can stay in the ICW or East Cut channels when running around and the only real shallow areas you need to watch out for are the spoils along the ICW south and the edges of the east cut once you get closer to where the islands start. There are a few other spots, but if you have a decent GPS they will show up on there.

As far as offshore, there are snapper closer to shore than the upper coast, but there isn't a ton of structure out there to fish. Some areas are 15 miles or so from the jetties, but may only be a couple miles off the beach.

We used to fish the Saucer area in large bay boats. We would wade and the water was usually waist deep.

A lot of the snapper spots are close to shore, but not all that close to the jetty. On a good day though you should be fine.

I fish Port M exclusively but only from Oct to April. The summer temps and traffic is just more than I can put up with.

Since we are talking about Port M and since I did not get down here at all last year, anyone have an update on the dredging progress. Saw a video back in April I think that showed a huge dredge working the mouth by the jetties and the report was they would work all the way back to the crossroads and perhaps even the harbor opening where it had silted up pretty good also. Any reports on the dredge progress?

Make a list of plans as the wind can be brutal down there and will only lay at night. Don't over look fishing the lights at night (assuming you have a house with a pier) as it can be super fun to catch hundreds of baby trout.

Yes on snapper, easy to get if you have spots. We went about 50 miles off one time in a bay boat and loaded it with black fin.

Looking for some info on these spots in Port Mansfield. Going down first week of February to do some Wade fishing. Has anyone had any luck or have any knowledge of the area circled in yellow for winter time fishing.
-Tide level in those areas for February
-Shell
-Rocks
-Mud

Thanks

I don't fish south of the port very often but do know West Bay has been packed lately. Tides are very low right now in PM, so you'd better know what you're doing, especially around Peytons and West Bay (your northwest circle). Oh, and there's virtually no shell or rock around PM except out the East Cut. Plenty of firm sand and mud depending on where you are.

That's Payton's to the west. No water at this time (maybe 1 foot)
Bird Island across from the Arroyo, same issue
The diamonds (I believe) are the spoils to the east, too shallow to get there this time of year.

And sometimes it blows all night too lol.

Winter time it's pretty much shallow down there so be aware of what your boat is capable of floating and running in. Some days there are not many people out there to help you should something happen.

Those spoils north of green island range from 8"-1' right now. You have plenty of water in the middle of green island between island and spoils for wading. As you get to the spoils on west side and to green island its 1' or less in some areas. South of bird Island off ICW will have wadeable water as well. Further east you go it gets pretty shallow.

Best times to fish in my experience in PM since 1981 are Nov-May (many people are hunting & less pressure/crowds) but I only fish in 5"-1' of water, sight casting to redfish & trout/black drum on occasion & the flats get too hot, the fish move into deeper water & makes it harder for me to spot, but you should be good those times too in deep water...just gotta have the time & skill to dodge the fronts that come through.
