New to offshore fishing down here. Came from Galveston and only fished offshore once or twice a year. Went out with a buddy in his boat a few days ago and hopped between some rigs out in the gulf coming out of Packery Channel. Same rigs were holding some good sized red snapper a few months ago this winter that we caught. This time, nada. Only a few bull reds to show for it. I know the water was colder this winter than it is now so I’m not sure why they weren’t there. Furthest rig was about 8 miles out. Also trolled for kingfish with no luck but at 62.5 degrees I wasn’t expecting much. Any knowledge as to why the snapper weren’t present? Also, when/ what temp do the kingfish generally show up? Overall am excited to fish state waters down here for some kingfish, Cobia, and snapper.

Abut 72ish degrees for kingfish. The snapper move in when the water is colder. It always made me cringe when people would post pictures of "state water" snapper limits in August.

This above is correct.
Also there are very nice state water snapper but not at the rigs. You’re going to have to beg, borrow, or buy bottom spots. For example ours is close to 30 miles from the PA jetties.

Knowing spots with structure is the key ... actually as you go down PINS there is more natural structure within state waters than off most of the rest of the Texas coastal waters ... for example take Baffin bay ... it doesn't just stop at the dunes separating it from the Gulf ... Years ago I googled Texas shipwrecks and got quite a comprehensive readout with locations on just about everything that has sunk in Texas waters ... most were recreational boats in the 20 to 40 foot range which when given the barren nature of the Gulf is quite a find for a reef loving marine species ... of course there were plenty of larger vessels too, do a little homework ...

Never googled all the wrecks but a few of my 'secret spots" arent so secret I guess...

As far as the statewater out of packery, the rigs and statewater reef get fished hard and often.

Ya, a friend of mine who is an offshore kayaker, brings snapper in year round. We have a few of the same numbers in state water. Dont mind seeing them or sharing info at all. Those guys work hard and reap the benefits.

They have some suped up electronics with downscan and sidescan and spend hours in spots most powerboats drive over and move on.

State water snapper are so close, you can paddle to it and catch snapper. Year round. Out of packery.

On a side note, when party boats fron port a start showing up, the cat is out of the bag. Which is the case for one area in particular. Oh well, we get a longer season this year!!!

Awesome video. I can’t wait to do more exploring down here. Such a better life down here compared to Houston in my opinion. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed fishing Galveston and still love the place. But Corpus has so much more to offer for what I like to do. And it just seems like it’s right in my backyard now.
