There’s a lot of folks running the 250 Pro XS and then it seems everyone jumps up to the 350 Verado, but you don’t see as many 300 Pro XS motors out there. I’m getting a new Haynie 25 Mag and specked it with the 250 Pro XS due to weight savings and the fact I’ve seen what one can do with that motor and it was enough. But the 300 Pro XS is the same weight as the 250 so I would like to consider the 300. It doesn’t net a full extra 50hp (it’s closer to 35) and will only give me 3-4 more mph (not a big deal to me), but I’m thinking the hole shot should be better. I’d like to hear from anyone running the 300 Pro XS and if they think it’s worth the extra $2k over the 250 or not. Provide some real world numbers too please.

And leave the Verado out of the discussion please. It’s about 160lbs heavier (don’t want to lose draft), cost more and is higher on maintenance cost. I’m not interested in it at all.

You won’t notice any difference in holeshot due to the tuning they run on a low end grunt. The only place you’re going to notice a difference in the 250 and 300 will be above about 4000-4500rpm. If you go with a 300 and a taller prop, you’ll actually lose a little holeshot. I learned all this by testing boats. Drove a 24 HO with both and noted this across 3 different motors from 225 PXS to 300 PXS.

i know you dont want to hear it but the magnum hull likes the weight on the *** end. Hull just performs better with the heavy verado and I really dont think you give up significant draft such that it would meaningfully alter the capabilities of the hull. 350 verado will go down as one of the best motors ever made right up there with the ox66 and its the perfect match for the magnum hull.

As to the 250 vs 300, if it was me it would come down to how I am using it. Most of my runs are 20-40 miles each way and 3-5 mph at cruise is significant for me. If your runs are relatively short and you value hole shot over speed then the 250 is the better choice.

All the guys running Verados on a magnum say they are the best and that the magnum likes the weight, but that is just the opposite of what the folks at Chris’s Marine have said. The only thing it gives you is more speed. The hull rides like a caddy with the Pro XS and the weight savings is significant for draft. I posted real world numbers of Epi Garza’s Magnum with the 250 Pro a couple of weeks back (numbers I witnessed). It did everything you could ask for on that boat. And 58-60mph is enough for me.

I’ve been to Chris’s marine 3 times in the last 6 weeks including this last Thursday, and my salesmen has talked me out of the Vrod every time. But I do appreciate the feedback on the 250 vs 300 Pro XS.

Generally when you have same motor/same block with different HP ratings.....the lesser HP has better hole shot/lower speed. And the higher HP block has better speed/lower holeshot.

They map it different to bring th HP/torque differently. Its a trade off. You can compensate for less low end hole shot torque of the higher HP in the prop but then you will be giving up the top end so there is no gain.

For example..... Etec offered ONE block that offered HP ratings as follows: 135, 135HO, 150, 150HO, 175, and 200.

The 200 was fastest. The 135 had the best hole shot.

So your statement above is incorrect. The 300 pro xs will NOT have better hole shot than the 250 pro Xs.

The 300 will burn more fuel and be faster with less hole shot.

Same block. They make power in different parts of their RPM curve with different power curve mapping and sending different amounts of fuel.

The low rpm high throttle position fuel, air and timing map is the same on all the ProXS V8s. They start pulling timing and fuel as the throttle position and RPM range changes. Very different world than the Verado and 2 strokes. It’s really weird but it works.

FYI that 300 will run away from a 350 for the first 10 seconds on that hull. A lot more torque.
