I just picked up a 1150 mercury, the guy says its a late 70's early 80's moter. The thing looks to be in really good shape but hasnt ran in 3 yrs.He says it was running when he parked it.Any suggestions on what i should do before trying to crank it up besides wd 40 in spark plugs to free the cylinders? Also any idea what this thing is worth or how good of a moter it is?Any replies greatly appreciated.

You are going to have to go through the carbs before this motor is going to run correctly and it will need a new water pump and maybe new thermostat. The carbs will more than likely be gummed up with old gas. Some people think that running the fuel out of the carbs will stop them from gumming but that isn't good for the motor in the first place for it runs the mix too lean when done that way. There are drains in the carbs but that doesn't always do the trick either. When left sitting that long they usually need to be rebuilt, period. Change the lower unit lube and check it for water which will show up as grey or white. Keep an eye on it regularly after that because when sitting that long seals and rubber parts tend to harden. Fuel pump diaphrams are usually needing new parts also. Johny Cobb is really good with those motors. His number is 832-286-1956. He has several if you need some parts.
