I sent this note this morning to my friends and family that live in Galveston to Corpus. They are starting their evacuations tomorrow and will join my wife and I at our home in Conroe.

"Our private weather service we use to do business planning has made this prediction this morning - Landfall between Baffin Bay to East Matagorda Bay Late Friday - Early Saturday as a Class 3 to Class 4 storm. Folks in low lying areas of Corpus, Rockport, Port Lavaca, Palacious, Matagorda, Sargent to West Galveston Island need to make plans to move inland. Storm will arrive earlier the further North it makes landfall. This storm is now following nearly the same path as Carla a Class 5 storm that made landfall near Port O'Conner on September 11, 1961."

Make your own choices for your family - we have made ours. We have a full capacity back-up generator with food, water, ammo and medical supplies to last as long as needed. Our home is 75 miles inland on high ground. It is a hipped roofed single story building with high wind load strength. We are staying put!

Dude, you're in Conroe, TX. You are unlikely to see anything, even if it was a Cat 5. Less drama, please. Do you really need to break out the "Planet of the Apes" theme song???

I think that this is the problem with people, they are not taking this storm serious enough! I live in Matagorda County, close to Palacios and we have already made plans to get out!
Flakman thanks for the info!

And reellove if I were you, I would be headed down now to get your family out!!!! Just to be on the safe side!

I think the problem with people is, some people are not taking it seriously enough, but many others, who live in the safe zone, are taking it too seriously. Flakman, that was not directed at you, but was directed at all the bozos from the Woodlands and Kingwood who panic evacuated Rita and contributed to the traffic jams and lack of gasoline.

This "Better safe than sorry" mindset sounds good in THEORY, but if you live North of Loop 610, it's bad in practice because when you clog up the freeways, you are trapping your neighbors who ACTUALLY DO need to evacuate on the freeways.

Please see the attached map if you want to see who really needs to evacuate. Even Downtown and The Galleria do not need to evacuate even a Cat 5.

Dude, if you had been in my house, in Conroe, in 83 when Alicia came through you would not feel that way at all! The wind and storm was bad enough and we were out of power for 3 weeks.

TXDOT hosed up the evac not the people evacuating.

Yes Sir I did. My wife works at D.S.M. in Freeport and they are doing a full shutdown. Randy Smith the Cheif of Police in Surfside says Get out. Tide surge will be between 8 and 11 ft. A 6 ft surge puts Surfside under water. Remember July 2003 Claudett put the whole island under water.

I heard that was a "special needs" evacuation. Did you hear if it has been upgraded to everyone?

We evecuated from Lake Jackson for Alicia to my uncles house in Spring where we had 100+ MPH winds and had 3 large trees fall on the house forcing us to move to a cousins house mid storm. Alicia was a minimal cat 3 storm a cat 5 would be much worse.

Here's the info:

Due to the threat of Hurricane Ike, the County Judge has issued a mandatory evacuation of Freeport, Surfside, Quintana, Oyster Creek and Jones Creek, along with a voluntary evacuation for the remainder of Brazoria County effective at 10:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, September 10. All BISD schools will be closed until Monday.

You got it - Roundman. My 80 year old uncle will be staying with us. He does not need to be in Port Lavaca for this storm and sure does not need for me to loose power because of some pine limb falling on a power line. Folks should remember that power is still out in Baton Rouge for many folks from a hit from a smaller storm (Gustov). Baton Rouge is 20 miles further inland than Conroe. My generator will keep us, our beer and food - cool! My family and friends will be far safer and more comfortable with me than sitting in thier blown out powerless homes near the bay.

That gives me a thought...I wonder if I should evacuate the family to the deer lease...
