Anyone ever been to Los Suenos in Costa Rica? I've been doing research on a great billfishing trip and Los Suenos seems to be an awesome place to go to catch alot of billfish and it seems to have that great tropical atmosphere. Any comments or suggestions? Thanks!!

I was there in June and it is awesome. I did not fish but that is not the time of year there to fish. The winter and spring is the season there for that. Los Suenos is a beautiful resort, I can post a couple of pics or the area when I get home if you want. I went with my wife and we did a canopy tour and ocean outrigger canoeing. The one thing I would recommend is to get out of the resort and drive around a bit and take in the local cuisine. It is much less expensive, like $5 for two, and it is excellent food. We were there for 4 days and needed at least 4 more.

I have not been to Los Suenos but heard from several friends it was well worth it. I have been to Guatemala with Artmarina (Artmarina.com). Lots and lots of sailfish (up to 50 in a day) and many on the fly. I would go back. Saw recently that Tim Choate had the Guatemala operation up for sale. Capt. Brad Phillips is an awesome Capt.

Good luck

Costa Rica

Been to Costa Rica twice now. Last time this past April. If you've never been, you will be awestruck by this place. The fishing, the scenery, the people. It is very addictive.

I stayed a Los Suenos the first year. This is the most upscale resort in the country. If you're looking for a resort-style atmosphere, you got it. gorgeous swimming pools, swim-up bars, landscaping, fine dining, waiters fighting over serving you. The marina is right there, floating docks. Multi-million dollar yachts abound. Typical resort pricing, too. But compared to most tropical destinations (Mexico/Caribbean), Costa Rica is a bargain no matter where you stay. Mike Canino as mentioned above is the guy to look up for a charter. He's a Houston/Galveston native.

Last time in April, we stayed down in Manuel Antonio, just south of Quepos. About 1.5 hour South from Los Suenos.
Much more local flavor, much more scenery, wild animals, etc. Way more laid back in my opinion. Charters were much less expensive, 600/day. Look up Bluewater Sportfishing. Had up 15 sails in one day (offseason). We stayed at the Karahe. Right on the beach, nice rooms, A/C, pool, hot tub, breakfast included for 50.00/night. Make sure you negotiate on whatever they tell you first (depends on the season, i guess).

Be glad to provide any other advice. Have fun.

We try to get down there about 2-3 times a year. Los Suenos is real nice if you don't mind spending quite a bit.

For fishing and a nice resort, we prefer Tamarindo, great sailfish and tuna.

Mountain and freshwater fishing, we prefer Arenal.

PM us if you would like details.

Los Suenos

Los Suenos is the ultimate place to go in Costa Rica . It has all the amenities to keep you and your wife if you take her with you happy. I personally prefer to use Costa Rican Dreams Sport fishing. Talk to Bill Aiken, he runs it with his partner Girard. I have fished with them a quite a few times and have never been disappointed. If possible fish with MIke Aiken, he is Bills son and takes fishing very seriously. If you ask Mike to put you on a Marlin, don't even think about asking him to switch to sails if you haven't raised a Marlin in 2 or 3 hours, because he will flat out tell you he will get you a Marlin. I know I lost a 350lb in the first 15 minites of trolling one morning the 4hours later and a couple of sails and dorado later he gave me a 500lb black marling just 15 seconds after I told him lets go for some sails on light tackle for my wife.

As for staying in Quepos that is a great town, I prefer the Hotel Si Como No. It is clean nice aand has a great Casino Accross the street at the "HO-tel" Byblos. And I do mean HO-tel, it is a "full" service hotel. Best stayed at on a guys trip.

If you go to Los Suenos' website click on the fishing icon and it will give you info to get intouch with Costa Rican Dreams. Book your room through them it is a buttload cheaper for nicer facilities, like a condo versus a hotel room. Los Suenos gives them price breaks. I learned the hard way. Billl Told me the next rip to call him and he would set up my lodging and I would save almost 1/2 of what I did in April 03.

The prime time for 20+ fish days is in February. I will porbably be down there this coming February.
