Yes a 25HP is all ya need for that boat. Plenty of torque..decent speeds. I had a 15 HP on a 14' fiberglass boat..moved me and the gear just fine. I have a 15HP Merc also. I had it on a 14 aluminum Jon boat..with me and the wife. Wide open over 25mph..yep! Then again..I re-furbished that motor.

It'll run fine and be fun. I would still want a little more power, but who doesnt?? We had a 14 foot aluminum that had an old Johnson 15 and it could pull up a skier under 200 lbs (not slalom), great for wake boarding and was just a lot of fun for us kids.

My, My... How far we have come. Miss that boat now!

http://houston.craigslist.org/boa/2628770347.html Is this boat overpriced, or a nice rig at a good price? Thoughts on it for use in West Bay?

Tight Lines
I have spent many a day in the shallow grassy bay behind Indian Beach subd.with my 8 hp evenrude on a 14ft lowe lake john not out drifting corankua n confederate in the wind but have had nice red s and flounder in what we call marsh drains I would park the john boat in the grass and cast across a small drain .

I use to slolom ski behind my dads 16ft allu. with a 25 hp on it, back in the day.....
I saw a 16 today that had a 70 hp Yammi on it.......I thought of that 25 hp my dad had and thought......WHAT THE HECK IS THAT GUY THINKIN....60 mph john boat. ?

I had a 16 jon w/ a 20 hp on a manual jackplate. Would run 28 mph with 2 big guys and tackle, beer, bait tank etc. Big advanatge is the lighter weight of a small motor, and you can get super shallow. We fished salt & fresh, rivers to jetties. Plenty of motor for a 16.

I suppose it all comes down to what one wants, but I brought a 15' Alumacraft with 2003 25 HP Merc to the coast when we moved here in 2007. I found it to be a little small for the bays here. We had to be very careful on windy days. It was plenty fast, just not enough boat for the rough water days.
