IOM TT

Isle of Man Tourist Trophy. A timed lap race on a motorcycle to see who can achieve the fastest lap around the island. Wide open stretches pinned WFO in 6th gear at over 180mph. Even faster on the 1000cc class bikes. Frequently hitting bumps and getting air. Coming close to bare stone walls at speed. Eye watering and intense. The IOM TT begins next week. I love this stuff.

The following is footage of a lap around the IOM island with the rider narrating his lap.

A montage of clips with background song, Faster by Within Temptation. Perfect song for the video.

This is the most dangerous motorcycle race in the world. I went through my crotch rocket phase in the early 2000's. I've had a CBR 600, R6, GSXR 1000 and 2 GSXR 1300's. I lost my best friend to a road racing accident in 2004 and hung it up for a bit then got into drag racing them instead of knee dragging them. 2 of the best dragstrip tracks in TX are in Houston, Houston Raceway (technically Baytown) and HMP. The street racing in Houston is crazy as well.

Yep and that’s why I love my electronic telescoping mirrors for when they want to street race between cars in traffic 😈

I don’t care for the wanna-be street racer idiots on the road. Both motorcycles and cars. Sorry it even went there.

I worked in Suzuki dealerships growing up and raced MX across Texas. I did all of the engine and mechanic work on my bikes. I love highly tuned engines, high revving performance, and fine suspension systems. I love most forms of motor racing on land and water. I respect the abilities of these IOM TT racers. I hope that all of them complete the race safely year. I too lost a friend from racing back in the 80’s.

What I'm not talking isn't this. Theres industrial areas that are shut down and used. I've seen races where 50k was on the line, roads protected by off duty law enforcement and tech inspection of the bikes / cars racing. Was it dumb, of course it was but who didn't do stupid stuff in their 20's 😂

I took few of my bikes to Houston to get tweaked and Dyno tuned. There was an older German mechanic thtbhad a Dyno in his garage at home, I wish I could remember his name. One of my Busa's had a stroked crank, bigger pistons, full head jobs and a lot of other things done. It made 254 at the bike tire on the Dyno. It broke my heart because it dropped a valve and ruined the cylinder head while tuning. We ended up taking it from a 1507 to a 1600. It would run low 8's with a professional rider. Man you just brought back a ton of forgotten memories.

I thought you were talking about those yahoos that literally race down the highways. I’m not a bike guy, or car guy in general, so I’ve never seen those organized street races. The only one I’ve seen in Houston is when they shutdown downtown for the formula one races.

This IOM TT is organized and the circuit is closed during racing. It’s an annual event that has been going on for years. It is unique and unforgiving. It takes a different kind of person to race in it. It takes a madman to win it.

David, I think drag racing is cool too. It takes a lot of skill and the engines are awesome! I would have loved to see the ports and crank and pistons of your engine before it blew. I remember doing small stuff on my 2-stroke engines like sanding transfer ports and exhaust ports to smooth the edges and polishing the cylinder head shiny. I marveled at the wild port jobs done by engine tuners on friends’ engines and loved to listen to them scream. I’m a big Suzuki fan and love Pops Yoshimura.

I follow MotoGP and WorldSBK too. Plus being a former MXer, I look forward to the upcoming outdoor racing season.

Had these at the same time, the long bike was 64" wheelbase all motor big bore, I had a professional rider for money races. This bike was feared at the track by Houston's best. The short bike was my street bike, 60" wheel base, Head and cams package with a hidden 50 shot of nitrous. This bike paid for itself a few times over.
