American Hunter mag has a neat story on tracking deer with GPS to learn the deers activity. BTW American Hunter is free if you join NRA. Researchers put GPS tracking collars on deer in several states to monitor deers travel etc. Some of the things that interest me was 1. Bucks home range (where he stays 90% of his time) is about 300 acres but during the Rut this expands to about 700 acres. 2. Bucks move most often at Dawn and Dusk (nothing new here) 3. Bucks are most active just before the peak of the rut. 4.During the rut bucks are most active during the day and less at night. something that will blow away a lot of peoples theory is they claim that moon phases did not show any different movement or behavior. This was a 3 year study and it was done on The king ranch and the faith ranch in Texas.

I had read a similar study that was done in Wisconsin. There was this nice 10pt buck they had collared and all through the season it stayed in a 1/2 mile draw, dense brush between two bedding areas. Even after all the drive style hunts and hunters moving around it only came out a few times during the day, even had hunters set up within a few hundred yards and they never saw it. Once they season was over it picked up a more normal pattern...pretty amazing.
