(Corpus Christi, TX)-Superintendent Joe Escoto announced that Padre Island National Seashore will open the Malaquite Beach Campground and Visitor Center, Bird Island Basin, and Entrance Station at 8:00 am, Tuesday, September 16, 2008. Park Rangers anticipate opening the Southern Gulf beach access on Wednesday, September 17, 2008 pending favorable beach conditions; however, if beach conditions are determined to be unsafe for staff and visitors, the closure may be extended. In the event beaches are opened, beach travelers are encouraged to drive at posted speed limits and drive with caution, as Hurricane Ike has contributed to a significant amount of seaweed and debris washing ashore. Visitors are asked to call the Malaquite Visitor Center at 361-949-8068 for more information on beach conditions prior to traveling to the National Seashore
