At my house in Rosenberg (that I grew up in), there are some big limbs brought down by Ike.

1. front yard - live oak - one large limb about 4-5 in - diameter
2. back yard - pecan (Cherokee) - 1 or 2 limbs - 3-5 in - diameter

I would like to have a set of pens made for my brother, my nephew & me.
- are these pieces large enough?
- do I need to let the wood dry out first?
- how long to age?
- chain saw in to what length pieces?
- seal the ends? with what?

Last question ..... would any of you turn these pens for me - I'm not a wood turner - or have any of the equipment (but would love to learn)

thank you for your help

Lady fish I would love to be able to do this for you but I can't at this time. I am sure one or more of these guys will jump on this for you.

LF - I'd be glad to do them for you but there are a lot of guys in the group with much more talent than I have. If it would have more meaning you are welcome to come use my shop (in NW Houston) and I'll help you make them - probably won't be as pretty as some but you would have the satisfaction of making them. Bobby - same offer to you. If you need a "fix" you're more than welcome to use my shop. Still on generator power but I flipped the switch on the lathe as I walked by today and it runs. The bandsaw and DC might be a strain but if I can locate a big natural gas generator tomorrow I'll be running on it by Friday. C'mon down.

Ladyfish, Those are plenty big. Cut sections a couple of feet long and then you can let them dry a while. Viking is being shy. He makes a nice pen and by the time those pieces are ready he will have had plenty more practice to boot. You should take him up on the offer to make them yourself or atleast go by and watch.

Cut them into about 2' sections and set them in the garage. Shouldn't have to seal the ends. Drying time? maybe two or three months. If you can get the logs up here I can cut them down and they'll dry faster. We'll take care of you, just get the logs to a dry place and let em start drying. Two or three logs of each is more than enough.

later, biggreen

thanks- ladyfish
