I posted this on another forum as well because it's too good not to share!!

First a little background.......
Just like most of you, I was hooked the very first time I sat in a blind and saw some birds falling in on some decoys. I spend way too much time and money chasing after birds but it really goes deeper than that. I just like to be outside. Not necessarily hunting or fishing, but just in nature.

I'm in Jacksonville, Fl right now doing some some work for Anheuser- Busch and I'm really missing the duck blind right about now. We were off today and I decided to do a little driving and see the sights while I'm in the neighborhood.

About three miles from the hotel I saw a Gander Mountain and as always I had to have a peek inside just in case they had something I "needed". Well, when I pulled in I saw a little lake out back with a few birds on it and my ADD kicked in. I dug around in my duffle bag and found a couple of calls while I was driving to the back of the store and found a place to park. I got nice and quiet and put my jacket on since it's 30 degrees (go figure!) and eased off into the reeds. After sitting still for a few minutes I saw some big ducks passing and as luck would have it, they thought Jace's Duck Picker sounded good enough for a second look! I sat there and called in three different sets of ducks before i got caught.

A security guard pulled up in his little Jeep Compass and asked what I was doing. So I walked up to where he was and simply explained the situation to him while he was taking down my license information and playing 20 questions. He was a real nice guy and let me go on my way so I just headed into the store to browse a bit.

There wasn't anything I just couldn't live without so I grabbed a Mountain Dew and headed for the checkout. And then it happened............... the peckerhead security guard had done called for re-enforcements. He was coming through the front doors with two guys from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commision and they looked MAD!!! He pointed me out like I was in a lineup and I was immediately detained "for the officer's safety". I was polite (like Daddy told me) and they were as courteous and professional as they could possibly be with Barney Fife bird doggin' them the entire time. After about 15 minutes of questions and looking at my Texas driver's license AND hunting license, I was a free man. They asked me to please leave the premises and to leave my calls at home from now on.

As Barney was escorting me out of the parking lot, I realized that I never paid for my MD. I made an honest effort and tried to go back and pay for it but he was already mad because I didn't go to jail or at least have an eye poked out or something. He said he would take care of it so I gave him 2 bucks and told him to have a nice day.

I'm sure there is a lesson to be learned here but I just can't quite figure it out!:slimer:

You were'nt in posession of a firearm so why call Fish and Game? I use calls all the time in the "off" season just to see the reaction.

Stupid is... as stupid does!!!

It is amazing how a$$anine some people are. I suppose if you would have stood in the parking lot and barked like a dog, the guard would have called the SPCA.

I'm not surprised now days how ignorance has manifested itself in this country.

Just the ability to call birds in is special and you have a person and FF&W officers who feel compelled to behave like they work for Homeland Security.

We will pray for your quick return to the Free Republic of Texas!!

Should have told them you were trying out some new calls you bought from their store. Then you could have thanked them for being so courteous!! LOL!!

It seems as though I need to take Gander Mountain off of my list of stores to shop at!

I called GM a few minutes ago and talked with the store manager for a few minutes. I was very polite and calm but I did make sure he knew my opinion. He said that the security guard works as a contractor for the city and that there was nothing he could do about it. BUT, he's a duck hunter as well and pointed me in the direction of a couple of places to go do some squawkin' and said that Barney is off until next Wednesday so come back anytime. After we talked for a minute and had a chuckle about the whole ordeal, he invited me to his house to check out some sea ducks that he shot on a trip to Alaska last season and a double banded Pintail from Katy of all places! WOW!! He did apologize profusely and even gave me a number to call at the corporate offices to voice any concerns. As far as the guys from Fish and Wildlife, I'd like to say they were just doing their jobs but the younger of the two was a jerk and the older officer knew that it was a waste of time so he just stood back and let the young dog chew on me for a bit.

I sure do miss small town Texas!!

Ok so the guard worked for the city so nothing you can do but explain to me what it was the guy from the fish and wildlife department was chewing on you about? Perhaps I am missing something but I know of no law in the US that prohibits bird calling and watching????

I guess he thought that you were going to call them and then jump up and grab them out of the air?? that's classic.

thanks for sharing.

In my experiences, when I was a police officer, I found most security guards to be complete idiots. I'm a pretty laid back, boring, calm, don't say much kind of guy but I have no respect for security guards for the most part and tend to either ignore them or rip them a new one if they approach me about anything. Obviously he was a cowardly POS and called the GW's because he had no clue about what is legal and illegal.

Not at all defending the stupidity of the SG, but had wtc, been some sort of kookoo, he was doing the job they put him there to do. As for the two F&W folks, I figure it was like once when I got pulled over by the Highway PAtrol up on 190.

They clocked me at just over the speed limit, less than 5 miles, and as they passed they hit there brakes, so I knew they were coming. I simply pulled over just on the other side of the next hill and waited, as they flew by me on the shoulder like I had been doin a hundred, and had to turn around and come back. I thought it was quite funny but figured it probably really ****** them off.

Well just so happend I had gotten a 6 pack just up the road before last call and had one about half gone in my lap, (pre open container). There were two of them and as the older one spoke to me, the younger one walked around my jeep with his light looking at all the fishing junk and camping equipment in the back. Then he scores a hit, the 5 beers in the ring in the passenger seat. So being fresh, he demands me out of the jeep and proceeds to follow the ritual to the tee, over and over again. We did their little roadside walky talky test, all the while him sking me the same questions and getting the same answers, all the while shining that 5 cell Mag light in my face. After this went on for around 15 minutes, I finally had enough and said, "look, I have already told you at least seven times, I am headed to the dam to fish, I haven't gotten there yet, so I don't have any in the cooler, I had half a beer and you can see that by what I have and what is missing form the rest, so if your going to arrest or ticket me do so, if not leave me the hell alone."

So I see his superior raise his hand to cover his mouth as he is laughing, and calls the boy over. They spoke a minute and then he comes back and hands me all my info and tells me to have a nice trip. They followed me from that point all the way to where I turned off to head to the dam, and believe me I didn't wobble one time.

Anyway the older fellow was I am sure letting the younger one get a taste of dealing with the public, probably gave him a few pointers afterwards, as well. As in my experience. Of course I could have easily been arrested for simply PI and had everything towed and paid a high cost, but the older fellow knew I wasn't screwing him around and I did pass all the test even the ABC's backward, but right is right, and I wasn't trying to hide anything at all from anyone.

Let me get this straight....you crawl into the reeds in a retention pond, at a Gander Mnt. to call ducks, and you're calling the security guards and Fish & Game officers a bunch of Barneys? Pot and Kettle seem to come to mind. LOL.

What a douche bag, he just had to validate his existence because he is just ****** at the world for having a job where people tend to laugh at you. Make sure to call the supervisor.

Why does it matter that he was calling ducks at the retention pond....If there are ducks on the pond get calling...Apparently it was a good decision as he called in three sets before getting harassed!
