Pretty slow for us in the Katy Prairie. By the sound of distant gunshots, some fields appeared to have been pretty hot though. Our group hunted morning and afternoon and finished with about 3/4 limits. Birds seemed to be concentrated in the realtively few fields that were freshly plowed. Unfortunatly for us, none of our fields were recently plowed under, so the going was tough.

GW checked everyone in our field late yesterday afternoon. Wrote a guy up down the field a little ways from us for having an unplugged gun.

How did everybody else do?

Not as good as years past...

We have been going to the same place for about three years now and this year we saw the fewest birds ever. We too could hear gun blasts from a distance and figured some areas were hotter than others. Either way we knocked down some birds and spent some quality time with my father and brother. I'll be back out there soon to see if it heats up any.

Fantastic! I took my daughter out to a buddies place on the prarie and we saw probably 50 - 75 birds total. I burned a box of shells and didn't hit a single one but I got to spend 3 hours with just my daughter and I watching the sunset so as far as I'm concerned, it was a resounding success!

Good shooting near Mason

Went out to Mason with a group of guys from Austin. Had plenty of birds. my limit was mostly immature birds, however, Of the 12, 2 were white-wings, one was mature and one juvenile. The 10 mourning doves were split between mature birds and 8 youngsters. We got to the field about 3 PM and I was finished shooting by 4:30. While I was cleaning my birds, the white-wing activity really speeded up. They were so thick, a guy could have easily limited out in 30 minutes. I trucked back over to the east end of the field and joined my buddies cleaning their birds. One guy had waited all afternoon just to be able to shoot nothing but w-w's. He was still popping caps when I headed back to Austin about 6:30.

Dove Birds

Hunted in the Spring area and limited out and picked up two Eurasion (collared) doves. It was very slow though. Probably the slowest in the last several years for that spot opening morning. I think the little cool front moved the birds because Saturday and Sunday the place was covered.

Sabinal on HWY 90

Scrached out a limit in the morning. Tough shooting, guys in the next field were skyblasting the whitewings causing them to fly even higher. 7 whitewings and 5 mourning made the limit. Hunted just West of Sabinal. Finally got a chance to break in my new left hand 11-87 woohoo!

Four of us bagged 4 or 5 birds apiece sitting at a tank northeast of San Antonio. Mostly mourning doves; seems like the whitewings have changed their flight pattern at this location compared to a couple of years ago (when they were really thick).

Couldn't beat yesterday evening's mild temps for a dove opener, that's for sure.

My hunt wasn't very good. I didn't even get out of the city limits. As a matter of fact I was still working at 6 that evening. Maybe someone will be so kind to take me up on my offer to trade a decent dove hunt for an opening day teal hunt at Winnie. Call if interested. 713.299.9792 Gary
