Quick question...I had a buddy give me 10 bags of horse feed (50 lb bags) and he told me to put it in the hog trap to see if they would eat it. I have never used horse feed for hogs. Just wanted to see if any of you out there have used this before. The feed smells like my protein feed I put in my protein feeder for the deer. Very sweet smelling.
Your thoughts???

You can sour just about anything. We used to use floor sweep from the feed store when we were younger. We would go get the busted bags and whatever hit the floor, put it all in a bucket, mix it with corn, add some water stick it out in the sun with a lid on it till it was good and stanky. It worked well.... problem is... it works too well and catches everything.

An old rancher at Kerrville told me years ago when he put out a new hog trap,he stomped a sack of oranges or onions around the trap to help them find the trap quicker.Sure would need to wear some old shoes or boots you could leave at the trap. After the oranges drawed the hogs to trap,he fed them corn for a few days before setting the trigger.I bet horse and mule sweet feed would be better than corn.

Molasses

A couple of years ago I let a trapper from Jourdanton catch pigs on my place. He used corn and cattle molasses that comes in the big blue tubs for bait. It must be a pig delicacy because we walked up to the traps they were eating it and could care less about what was fixing to happen. One time I had a bunch of turnips I put in a hog trap over by Tivoli, didn't catch any pigs but the cows pushed that trap all over the place. This is kind of gross but we caught pigs using pig guts for bait also. If you want something that really sours get about three quarters of a five gallon bucket of okra, the ones too big to eat and top it off with water. Let it sour for about a week and it is about the smelliest stuff on earth. I haven't tested it I don't want to risk spilling any in my truck.

sweet feed will work great. Every time I have an aporkalypse or hog-a-thon I mix some with corn and spread it out. They can smell it a long ways off. Really brings them in. I'll be doing that this weekend under the full moon.
