Anybody made a homemade livewell? I am going to Home Depot tomorrow to get supplys. Where did you get your tank? I'd like to get a poly drum of some sort. We were thinking about plumbing it with a distribution nozzle and pipe it with PVC and a 1100 gph pump. Thinking about putting a overflow drain of some sort. What do you think? Got any pics?

Thanks.

Is this livewell for a boat or portable?? What size boat if applicable?? A little more info and I could help you out quite a bit. I have been Surf Fishing for years using live bait and have tried more than my share of homemade livewells. I have a keep alive system now and would highly recommended it. However if you are trying to save money, then that's a different story. SM :)

We are taking a trip on a large sportfish. It doesn't have a livewell yet. So, we have to come up with something. The guy who bought the boat hasn't installed one yet. Not really looking for a permanent solution, just one that will work for a 4 day trip.

Livewell

I have a 30 gal. poly drum to which I added a through the hull livewell pump. The pump is similar to those used in bass boats. The pump had to be placed near the bottom of the barrel in order to lift water. It would not suck water up when placed at the top. I added a spray tip to the hose. So the water is pumped from the bottom of the barrel to the top and sprayed back in. Works well on short trips. You would need to filter the water or change it for longer trips. Capt. Ken let me bring the barrel on the La Pesca 24-hr trip last month. We just kept the deck hose running into the barrel since we didn't want a 12-v deep cycle battery sliding around the deck.

Good Luck

If the boat has a raw water washdown. Just put the hose in a large round trashcan and put it on the back of the boat and let it overflow on the deck. You could easily plumb something with a pump and some hoses. A large ice chest also would work as a livewell, try to find on with rounded corners. Roy's in Corpus carries the keep-alive tanks and pumps. If you replace the water in one of these every couple of hours, you should be able to keep bait alive in them indefinitely. Good Luck, SM :)
