Hello all,
We are planning to deploy the 14 deepwater buoys in the Hilton's Texas FAD Network in mid-January!
They span 160 nm between FAD 1 to FAD 14 and will provide more options for Texas bluewater fishermen as well as bring the bluewater fishery within reach of chart boats and center consoles.
We are working with the Gulf Research Institute for Highly Migratory Species from Texas A&M Galveston and deploying scientific instrumentation on selected FADs (underwater time lapse cameras and acoustic transponders) and have made the necessary adjustments to accommodate those instruments. We will be posting up the photos from the time lapse cameras and other pertinent information on the www.TexasFads.com website.
Best,
Tom

While I am glad these are going in, these are not quite what is in Florida and can we get some in closer. While I have taken my boar 50 miles out, it is not common as it is not 30 plus feet. I will add the locations and if conditions are right...

I run my 26 footer out to 75 miles regularly. I'm super stoked

Keep in mind it is 70 miles out of Freeport to get to 400 feet of water. In Pensacola, the distance is ~35 miles. FADs hold fish and the ones being deployed in TX will do that job. Providing that people adhere to the no mooring signs, they'll stay in place too. This just means you'll not have to travel to Boomvang or Nansen/Hoover to find tuna and other pelagics. We DO need more reef material in closer, but our shallow area of the gulf really prohibits that as the bottom gets stirred up by storms and we also have shipping lanes to contend with.

Plugged the coords in and looks like the FADs will be 80-85 miles offshore from Freeport jetties and spread across a 20.5 mile range from one end to the other. Also being put in 1300ft unless I put the coords in incorrectly.

I've never fished stuff like this but it doesn't seem like much structure other than a big buoy and long chain. How well would they hold pelagics?
