Here is the report. I will try and post some pictures this evening.
Hit High Island b/w the piers on Saturday with Buckeye. Arrived at dark thirty and when the sun came up, I was greeted with TONS of weed in the wade gut and on the first sand bar. My first attempt at a casted bait lasted about 2 mins. with a 7' rod. After a couple more trys, I waded out to the first bar (wade gut was chin deep) and slung my 4/0 wide on my 12' oceanmaster. That one stayed out about 1/2 hr.
Buckeye shows up about then and we go about yakking our baits. Not long after his first line is in, Buckeye gets a run and pulls in a 51" finetooth. I get a small run on one of my yakked baits a little later but no hookup. Buckeye gets another run and pulls in a 53" blacktip. After the excitement, I am tending his rods as Buckeye drops a bait. Just as I finish tightening up the line, I get a sreaming run on my 4/0 wide (which I had yakked out at this point). I look out and see whitewater busting the surface about 400 yards out and my reel and screaming. Fought it for 20 minutes only to loose it on the deep side of the first bar. It bit through my 250# stranded cable. Probably the best shark I have hooked up to yet. Next wire drop out had 400# stranded cable.
Buckeye gets yet another good run but he too loses this nice fighting fish just beyond the 1st bar. It pulled the hook. Fought like a 5' plus bull shark because we ended up about 400 yards down the beach. We'll never know though. All this action happened before 10:30 am. After that, the weed finally started to let up but so did the fish. We each had a couple short runs that missed the hooks and other than a redfish that he didn't even know was hooked, that was it for the action until 3pm when we wrapped it up. Weed was tough to deal with until 11am or so but with no waves and little current, and lots of wading to clean lines, our shark rods could be fished. Hardly any bait in the water all day.
