124 mph winds clocked and 3-5 ft soundside flooding at the height of the beast Tue afternoon. As one motel owner put it, "they got their butt kicked".

NWS dropped the ball on forecasting. No evacuation notice. No boarding up, etc. All went to bed with a 60 mph tropical storm and awoke to a Cat 1 enroute to a Cat 2 hurricane. Too late to leave then.

Once these storms near the warm Gulf stream waters off the Carolina Coast, anything is possible, as we saw.

I would have left long before life, limb, and property was in question. That island sits out in the ocean and is one thin strip of a sand bar. One should always err to the side of caution.

I can't help but think the tourist dollar influenced county officials thinking at the height of touron season.
