Well,
It's almost fathers day and I'm looking for any input on In-Car Gps's.
One that you can switch from car to car with little effort.
I've heard of Garmin and the TomTom. I'm looking for something for my Dad to use that's user friendly and is easy to read with poor eye sight. I hear that there are some that give verbal turn by turn instructions. Anyone one have a GPS that they can't live without?? I've narrowed it down to a garmin as of now but, i haven't had time to research them all.
Thanks, Hop

New from Alpine,,,cant beat them,,,you can also buy an optional docking station, stow it in the rear of the car and control it from an Alpine Touch Screen Headunit that replaces your existin car radio,,,I know you probably don't want to get into that part of it but just letting you know its got more capablities than the Garmins and Tom Toms,,,PM me if you are interested,,,

Have a Magellan roadmate 700 and "Maggie" has always gotten us there whether near or far
We've got a 700 as well and enjoy it. It has a hard drive with built in maps so no need to buy anything else. Most of th GPS give verbal but if you can afford it, get one that gives you a verbal by street name.

How user friendly are all of the above? My ol'man is 60, he and electronics with lots of buttons don't get along. I like the idea of having all the maps already installed. Do the resturant/hotel location features work pretty good?

Welp! It's getting closer to fathers day. I'm still undecided as of now!
That Garmin is sweet! Best price i've seen on it is still a bit high for a fathers day gift.
Maybe i can roll it all into one, b-day, christmas, and fathers day!! LOL

Does he by any chance have a laptop? If so, you can get a Garmin GPS 18. It's a hockey puck antennae that plugs into your USB port and used included software. It gives turn by turn verbal instructions, lists attractions etc. I bought it because I had trouble seeing a small screen and I already had the laptop. They only run about 100 bucks and I've gotten a lot of use out of mine.

Viking,no laptop. I'm wanting to buy a laptop myself. As for now It will have to be a stand alone GPS.

John, Looks like a good deal. I'll just need to do some research first.
The bigger the display the better.

Just whatever you do, buy from a local business, the internet kills the local guys. Warranty after the fact if you have problems is a real pain from internet houses,,,Try JTBurf or one of those guys,,,,support your local businessman!

I just bought the Garmin 2730 and its pretty good. I need to determine how to upgrade the maps however. I live in a neighborhood that is close to 2 years old and it is not on the maps. Otherwise, I am pleased although it was almost $900.
