Got Boudin?

Grilled, baked, steamed in shallow broth, boudin is always delicious. For grocery store boudin, I’ve found DJ’s to be the tastiest and it appears they’re from Beaumont. I’ve tried a few other brands but they lack the flavor of DJ’s. I’d like to find other brands that taste good.

For the boudin peeps that buy from the grocery store, what brand(s) do you like and recommend?

I tried your recommendation of Herbert’s. Pretty good.

I did try DJ’s from HEB and liked it better than Herbert’s. I got the jalapeño one.

My favorite is from a hole in the wall gas station in Lake Charles. Trying to find the name.

I had DJ’s Jalapeño boudin last night with chopped onions/jalapeños/serranos and some el yucateco xxx hot sauce. Yummmmm 😉. I like their smoked boudin too.
Just finished up 2 DJ's sticks. Best I have found readily available. Zummo's is not bad either and also from Beaumont. Lots of cajuns in the area. Nicks in Port Arthur was the absolute best but they closed up shop.

I agree DJ is the tastiest store bought locally around Houston, has anyone tried DJ dirty rice , is it the same as the boudin less the casing .

DJ’s spicy for me. I really don’t have much to compare it to but I like the flavor of it.

Waiting to hear this answer. I see that flat pack package in the cooler and lick my chops and wonder. I will try it next time.

While I haven't tried this brand, most dirty rice recipes call for more rice than meat. Boudin is usually more meat than rice. Also, boudin is generally made from pork and/or seafood. Dirty rice is usually made with ground beef.
I make dirty rice quite often with ground brisket/venison burger. Made boudin a couple times. While it was really good, it was quite a process. Now I let Billy's or Best Stop make all my boudin! Might have to give this DJ's a try. 😁🍻

yes it is. I use it to stuff pork loins, pork chops, flounder, and as a topper for redfish on the half shell. I'm lazy and no need to take an extra step of removing the boudin out of casing when you can buy it ready to go.

nope. a guy i went to school with has been selling his stuff at butcher's korner. he makes brisket boudin too that is tough to beat. ancelet's cajun market, yellow rose meat market, and hell our local market basket is really good too.

perhaps the best in our area has closed though. i'd put the old Nic's grocery up against almost any

Honeres in Manvel makes a pretty authentic Cajun boudin.
For store bought DJ’’s is pretty close. We use the DJ dirty rice mix at thanksgiving every year for our dressing.

If you get the chance, and you have a pellet smoker, try double smoking DJ's smoked boudain until you get it up to serving temp. Oh Man! Das some good stuff, cher!

Why is a pellet smoker required?
If you are ever in Normagee on Hwy 39 stop by Thiess Sausage and try a couple different varieties. I get deer boudan made their about every two years.
Not cheap but excellent stuff.
