there was a thread on TKF a while back on the subject, but I can't find it. the guy used a mtorcycle battery in a backpack. He said it lasted all night. I heard on the 610 radio show where someone used a deep cycle battery in a cooler floated by a PVC ring.

Cheapo Raft

I just use an inflatable raft from Academy or WallyWorld. The size made for 2 people is perfect for a 12v car/boat battery and a cooler. Just make sure your tether for the raft is shorter than the battery cord for the light, or everytime the raft floats back the light will come unclipped. It works best if you put the battery in the front, and then the cooler behind it. I had to lengthen the battery cord on my light, but it was worth it. Also, since it is supposed to be a boat, it supports lots of weight and tracks well as you tow it behind you too. Little kids or overserved fishing buddies can also ride in it if need be!

Call me old fashioned

but, we just use coleman lanterns. We tied a loop of nylon around the middle (between the globe and tank) and then to the handle. Make it short enough so that the lantern carries at an angle. Sometime we duct taped or used a section of PVC where you would hold the rope. Then use some alum. foil as a deflecter on the back half of the globe. We use to gig all night like that. The trick was getting them on the stringer.

I'm with 2 guns here....been usin the lantern with tin-foil deflector all my life, and got 2 in the shed set up that way right now. I made my handle loop big enough that when I stick one I can loop the handle over my arm that is holding the gig handle and then reach down with the other hand to grab the tines of the gig under the fish and flip em over....string em up and head for the next one.

Good luck!

I bought some lights a couple of years back. I also bought some Motorcycle batteries from Wallyworld and they lasted around 4 to 5hrs. We used the backpack idea. Worked good but gets a bit tiring after the first hour. I think using a float of some sort would be a better set up than a backpack.

I went back to Academy and bought a small floating cooler (River Rat style) and a small deep cycle bat. that fits right in the cooler. It has a loop to attach a line to my waist. It also has drink holders around the outside of the cooler to hold drinks or extra tackle. I'm headed to Aransas Pass tomorrow any suggestions on places to start? I've heard East Flats, Lydian channel, and Atlantic cut around Shamrock might hold fish. I'll post a report Sunday or Monday! Thanks Guys
