Gas mileage

I don't want to open up a can of worms. I know everyone loves their make of truck.

From everything I read and hear, Tundras get terrible mileage.

So, what's the skinny? How does the real world Tundra mileage compare to comparable American made half ton 4WDs?

Thanks

The 2021 and older Tundra’s didn’t get good mpg and in my opinion didn’t tow well either. It just wasn’t something Toyota focused on and Ford loved it. But the new (2022 and newer) Tundra’s get much better (avg 20 or better) since they basically have the F-150 Ecoboost engine. Not the same engine but same size and concept (twin turbo v6). You can no longer buy a Tundra with a v8. They’re all 6 cylinders now.
Thanks Jerry. I should have specified, I'm talking about the mid to late teens V8 Tundras vs similar model American trucks.

Gotcha I had. 2014 Tundra full size truck. I averaged around 15 mpg. Not great but not horrible. I switched to a 2017 F-150 (with the 3.5 Ecoboost) and the difference in towing power was shocking. It literally felt like I went from a gas to a diesel. My Tundra struggled pulling a 28’ travel trailer that was around 7k lbs loaded.
The maintenance is something else to consider on a tundra. My maintenance cost on my tundra was double that if the F-150. But the Tundra gave me 103k trouble free miles and I definitely didn’t get that with the F-150.

If you’re looking at one they are generally well built trucks without a lot of issues in my opinion.
If you want the best 1/2 ton motor on the market, get the new 3.0 Duramax in a GM truck, especially now with diesel within .20 of gas. These trucks get a legit 27-30 highway, and tow better than any motor you'll find in a 1/2 ton.

I agree 100% with SSST. I have a 2020 silverado 3.0L the first gen in this motor and absolutely love it. I pull my camper and bay boat all over the state and get 16 mpg while towing those and empty I'm getting 26.5 mpg it will get 30-35 mpg all day doing 65mph and currently have 50000 miiles without a single issue.
Thanks guys, but any newish truck, and probably any diesel, is out of the price range of this old retired guy.

Its tough to beat the reliability of the Toyota's, they are like Timex watches, they take a licking but keep on ticking! I have 3 different vehicle's that have Toyota V8's. 2 are 2004's, 1 has 190,000 miles and the other has 250,000 miles, ill drive either one of them cross country without thinking twice. The 3rd is pretty new but my wife doesn't let me use it because she says ill get it fishy inside 😂

I have a 2015 1794 4x4 Tundra. I love it.
I'm sort of anal about checking my mileage. When i was a kid, my old 69 Ford F-100 didn't have a working gas gage so I learned one good lesson and check it at every fill-up. Highway mileage at 75 mph on cruise control, from one Buccee's to the next is 16-17mpg. In town 13.5 - 14.5 mpg. Towing 9.5-10 mpg.

I sold my old power stroke with 328K miles after 19 years. I wanted something that was going to get me over 300K miles. I bought my Tundra after I read about the "Million Mile Tundra". My Tundra now has has 166K miles and no issues. I've pulled flat beds and my boat and a small RV. No it doesn't pull like my old Power Stroke but it does what I want it to and I'm sure I'll get over 300K.

Thanks guys. I'm not seeing anything that would discourage me from choosing a Tundra over an American truck. I have a Tacoma now, but need something with higher tow capacity.

I have had an '07 tundra with the big V-8. I bought it new. I get about 16-18 mpg highway if I keep it under 75mph. Tows my boat just fine but gets thirsty - about 9-10 mpg towing. Just about to 210,00 miles and really minimal repairs. I'm a fan. Can't get on board with the style of the new ones though, and personally I am still a little skeptical of the longevity of the turbo'ed v6's although I have read a lot of positive discussion on them. I am still believer in "there's no replacement for displacement".
I have a 2014 tundra with the 5.7 and average about 15 mpg daily driving. I love the power and towing compared to the last two 1500 gmc trucks I had. The tundra blows them out of the water. My old z71's averaged about 17 mpg according to the truck computer. I would take a 2 mpg loss and the tundra any day.
2019 with 5.7.
One size taller tires, avg 13-14 mpg putting pen to paper. Computer is always 2-3 mpg off.

Had 2 Silverado’s before. A 15 with 5.3, lifters on left side went out at 30K miles. Avg’d 15-17. Got it fixed under warranty then traded in for a 17 with the 6.2 and 8 speed. The 6.2 avg’d 17-19.

All have had the same size GoodYear Duratracs.

I’ll never go back to a GM after this Tundra.

The 38 gallon tank only has about 32 useable gallons though. Still good for 400 miles to a tank.
Thanks for all the replies guys. I'm going today to look at a 2015 Tundra that might be "the one". LOL

I drove a 2004 Silverado 2500 for 14 years with no engine problems at all, although i did have other issues: idler pully, wheel bearing, transfer case, rusted brake lines, etc. Rust from beach driving finally made it too problematic to maintain.
