I noticed a strong gas smell yesterday morning and got an check gas cap message on my dashboard of the 2004 F-150. I tightened the gas cap but continue to get the message even after resetting.

Anyone else run into this problem? Anyone know the diagnosis or fix?

Gas cap my be leaking (vapor) or the EVAP system may also have a leak. Try buying a new cap. The light will not go out until the problem is fixed and the code is cleared with a scanner.

Not sure about fords but on GM products you have to give the cap 1 full turn after it starts clicking. Could be that your gas cap needs to be replaced. Any place that does state inspections can test the cap for you.
