Most of us here on this board share a love for fresh fried fish. My question to you is how do you dispose of your cooking oil after use?

I'm more into grilled or baked fish these days but when I do fry fish I usually use a gallon of peanut oil. Afterwards I just pour the oil back in the gallon container, screw the lid down tight and put in trash can. Anyone here have a better way of disposing the oil?

I do the same thing you do.

I have some friends that re-use the oil. But I prefer to chunk it.

Hulla, If you have a diesel just filter it and pour it in the fuel tank. J/K..... Seriously though , we mix it wiith diesel and use it in our Pressure Washer burner. Works fine , give off an odor like frying fish. I just filter it and put the crispies in the trash and the rest gets mixed 50/50 and burned. Adding it to you vehicle could be bad. It will burn, but the vegy oil attack the orings and rubber and could cause some problems. Dont want to break down somewhere because of that. A shop heater or P/W burner are a little less sensitive to fuel quality . just my .02

I rebottle mine and drop it off at the oil recyle containers behind a mexican restraurant. It's then recycled.

I hate to see the mess in the street in front of my house after a party.
Everyone knows it was mine.

I re-use it two or three times. Don't let it get too hot, filter it and keep it in a cool, dark location. The next time that you use it, drop a couple of chunks of potato in once it gets up to 375°, and the fish smell from the previous batch will be gone. After two or three uses, I just toss the jug in the trash.

Fish grease

I prefer pan fried fish as opposed to deep fryer, therefore, I dont have a lot of grease. I get it pretty hot, but dont burn it, filter it, and put it in a container and put in my "beer icebox". I get 2 or 3 cookings out of it, then pour it along the bottom of my rear fence to kill grass (open field in back of fence).

I reuse the oil several times then I throw it in the trash. A couple of potatoes thrown in after the oil gets to 375 degrees will remove any fishy smell.

I just toss mine in the trash like y'all have said. But I had not heard about the potato trick. I'm gonna give that a try and see if I can't get one or two more uses out of it now.

Your Killing Your Oil

Turn the temperature down on your cookers. I run a restaurant for a living and I will tell you that by dropping you temperature to 350 degrees you can extend the life of your cooking oil and get almost twice the life out of it. What kills cooking oil is temperature, water, spices, an floating food pieces. Get you some filter cones and strain your shortening when it cools down. I know that I use commercial cooking equipment but my fryers run from 4am unitl 11pm and I can get a good 10 days usage out of the cooking oil before I throw it out. That's about 150 hours of hard usage. Yes I filter my fryers every day and no it does not look like burnt motor oil when I throw out. If the quality of my cooking oil effects the taste of my fried product I change it out then. No excuses accepted. As for disposing of old cooking oil, take it to your local burger joint. Pour it in their grease container. Just don't spill any on the ground around the conatiner. I really $%^& me off when one of my crew spills it outside, it is a mess to have to clean up. Used cooking oil is like nuclar waste, disposed of it properly becasue the enviorment does not break it down. The **** just hangs around and goes rancid. Just as a final note, the used cooking oil is recycled and is used it animal feed.

I do the same as red3fish. Also splash it on the bottom of the wooden fence. Keeps water from soaking in as quickly.

I'm with R3F & B-Rat.

I also have two stagnant old water holes out behind our place that were skeeter breedin slime holes. I dump a gallon or 2 into them every now and then to keep them bug free now. I also add it to my rain barrels to keep the skeeters out of them, a cup or two in a 55g drum does the trick.
