I have a hand held Uniden marine radio that did not work out too well. I am looking to move up to a fixed mount unit.

Does anyone have any recommendations on a good unit or which units to avoid?

ICOM is the only way to go. Believe me, I've learned the hard way with other brands.

Icom is a 1st choice radio with Standard a good 2nd option, period.

I strongly recommend Icom's IC-504. It isn't a $99 radio but it does more than most other VHF radios at any price. You'll love the ability to talk and hear (both built in speaker & Speaker mic) and the hailer and automatic fog signals.

Don't know how far you run but if you go out far, 8' antenna is a highly recommended way to go.

I had the ICOM M302 and really enjoyed it - for the short time I had it before I sold the boat. Seemed like a good radio for $200 and the DSC feature was a nice piece of mind. I had the 3' stainless whip antenna, which seemed to work fine in the bay. Had it mounted high on the grab rail of the console.
