Lake Jackson was manditorily evacuated Thursday around 8:00 or so. Packed up the kids and dogs and headed for Hot Springs, Ark. Rented a room at the lodge and spent 5 nights goofing off at the lake. Am I entitled to get reimbursed for my expenses? Still don't have power at home, do I get paid back for a generator? Geepers, I haven't used federal or state aid ever but wouldn't mind getting some money back.

Keep all your receipts, fema will be giving out assistance. We got our hotel rooms reimbursed when we evacuated for Gustav. Check on there websites and just ask around. There's alot of aid you just have to know where to apply.

People who have insurance need to check their policies to find out if their hurricane-related expenses, including evacuation and purchase of generator, is covered. If their policy covers all expenses, then they are ineligible for FEMA help.

People with insurance will receive an immediate denial. But those who only receive partial insurance coverage should submit an appeal to FEMA and ask for an inspection of their damages

This is from the FEMA website.

I was wondering about hotel and living expenses during this time as well. The FEMA website seems to only apply to house damage and uninsured home owners/renters.

We don't have home damage (and we do have insurance) but we have spent about $1000 on hotels and expenses since we were told to evacuate Galv County.

Anyone know where to go to apply for these expenses to be reimbursed?

What about if you're out of work because of the storm? I checked their web site and it said if you were made unemployed but what about if you can't go back to work right away after the storm? I may be out of work for a couple of weeks until we get they get the plant up and running again?

Not sure. I saw the FEMA guy on the news today saying that FEMA would reimburse those who's homes were uninhabitable, but he made a point of saying that no electricity does not make a home uninhabitable, just uncomfortable. I don't know what your situation is financially, I don't know how a "mandatory" evacuation affects the reimbursement, and I hope you are enjoying your stay at the lake.....but are you serious? I am a lucky dog, I have power but no running water. There are many, many, many, many people down here that have neither, those people (especially those in rural areas) are running out of food and water and they don't have enough gas to get to a FEMA Point of Distribution to get their 2 bags of ice and days worth of food and clean water for their families. Not to sound harsh, but is now really the time to start asking about how the Federal gov't is going to reimburse you for your generator and family vacation expenses?

all the below info is not exact but it will point you to right direction out. Your home owner insurance will pay for up to 30 days if house is 50% damaged, will pay for food damaged, most have 15 deductible, some 2% . if you lost few shingles they pay for patricidal damage , if roof is very damaged then they pay for all the shingle replacement . fence they pay for what the fence was worth ,if it is old then very little reimbursing.

fema will ask for your insurance to pay and then they cover according to your income , if you are rich forget it . they will offer low interest loan.

Assistance for Affected Individuals and Families Can Include as Required:
  • Grants for home repairs and replacement of essential household items not covered by insurance to make damaged dwellings safe, sanitary and functional. (Source: FEMA funded and administered.)
  • Grants to replace personal property and help meet medical, dental, funeral, transportation and other serious disaster-related needs not covered by insurance or other federal, state and charitable aid programs. (Source: FEMA funded at 75 percent of total eligible costs; 25 percent funded by the state.)
  • Unemployment payments up to 26 weeks for workers who temporarily lost jobs because of the disaster and who do not qualify for state benefits, such as self-employed individuals. (Source: FEMA funded; state administered.)
  • Low-interest loans to cover residential losses not fully compensated by insurance. Loans available up to $200,000 for primary residence; $40,000 for personal property, including renter losses. Loans available up to $2 million for business property losses not fully compensated by insurance. (Source: U.S. Small Business Administration.)

How to Apply for Assistance:
  • Those in the counties designated for assistance to affected residents and business owners can begin the disaster application process by registering online at http://www.fema.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or 1-800-462-7585 (TTY) for the hearing and speech impaired. The toll-free telephone numbers are available from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (local time) Monday through Sunday until further notice. Applicants registering for aid should be prepared to provide basic information about themselves (name, permanent address, and phone number), insurance coverage and any other information to help substantiate losses.
Application procedures for local governments will be explained at a series of federal/state applicant briefings with locations to be announced in the affected area by recovery officials. Approved public repair projects are paid through the state from funding provided by FEMA and other participating federal agencies.

Why should the government reimburse you back? They were just trying to protect you from a Hurricane. They didn't cause the Hurricane. Like Sandollr said, be happy you are not in the position of other unfortunate people that lost everything and that your family and house is fine.

have not been able to work since the hurricane hit. My employer says that I still have a job, but I am not drawing a paycheck. Does FEMA pay for lost wages?
If you lost work because of the disaster you may qualify for Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA). Contact the local office of your State's Employment Commission for information about DUA.

I am living in someone elses travel trailer and using my daughters water and power. And you want FEMA to pay for your familys vacation????????????

I am sorry for your loss Bobby, but I would hardly call evacuating my family on a moments notice to avoid risking their lives and impending destruction, a vacation. I've taken vacations before, this was no vacation. And it may not be the financial burden that less fortunate people are undertaking, but it is still difficult for many. Personally, I don't need or want financial assistance ahead of those in more need (those who choose to live on the coast), but that doesn't mean I'm not entitled. Again, I am sorry for your loss, Godspeed.

I chose to live on the coast just like the people that live in tornado alley that have been hit by tornados more than I have been hit by hurricanes. I know that it could happen anytime. I knew that when I bought my house. I chose to take that risk. Should all those people that live anywhere that a tornado or a earthquake could hit not be allowed to live there or have insurance? I mean they did chose to live in that area. I don't expect FEMA or anyone from the gubberment to help me out. Thats why I have insurance supposedly. Now my problem is that I am going to have to fight the insurance companys to get anything. Insurance companys don't make money paying out claims. They will find anything they can to keep from paying. I have delt with them many times in the past 60 years.

Bobby is right on.....

Not to put too fine a point on things, but no one was forced to leave. Those that did showed good sense and responsibility to get their loved ones out of harms way. Why should anyone be entitled to be paid for having good sense?

I chose not to leave but I knew we would highly likely be without power so I bought a generator. Voluntarily. Should your tax dollars pay me for it? Hell no. I didn't have to buy it, I chose to.

We need more Bobby attitudes around this country.

Fire away..............
Bob
