Officers and tracking dogs are preparing to launch another search in Brazoria County this afternoon for a convicted murderer who escaped from a state prison there two weeks ago.
Marlow Wayne Reynolds, 55, a Liberty County man who was serving a 40-year sentence for murder, escaped from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice's Stringfellow Prison Unit in Rosharon on Sept. 9. Investigators today released a surveillance photograph showing Reynolds shopping at an Exxon gas station in West Columbia, 25 miles away from the prison. The picture was taken Monday.
Reynolds visited the gas station's convenience store three consecutive days and bought Mad Dog 20/20, a cheap wine, and some bottled water, said TDCJ Inspector General John Moriarty. He has not returned to the store since Monday..
"He's still in the area," Moriarty said. "We believe he's hiding in the wooded area around or in an abandoned location.
Officers and tracking dogs are gathering in West Columbia later this afternoon to sweep wooded areas searching for Reynolds.
The surveillance photograph reveals Reynolds has duct tape bandaging his left wrist. Investigators believe the tape covers a wound that Reynolds suffered — perhaps when he was cut by razor wire while scaling a 10-foot fence in the prison's recreation yard or perhaps if he was struck by one of three gunshots a correctional officer fired at him as he fled.
Reynolds also is wearing regular clothes. On Monday, he wore a camouflaged baseball cap, sunglasses, a green shirt with short sleeves and blue jeans.
Reynolds, who was classified as a minimum-risk inmate with no outside trusty privileges, broke out of the Stringfellow Prison Unit four days before Hurricane Ike struck the Texas Gulf Coast. He ran into a heavily wooded area and reached the Brazos River 3 miles away, where bloodhounds lost track of him. Searchers dragged the river looking for him, but found nothing.
Reynolds was convicted in 2004 of killing a drinking buddy, Leslie Ledford, 36, in the Liberty County town of Dayton. Reynolds tried to incinerate Ledford'sbody in a trash pit.
The Stringfellow Prison Unit, formerly known as the Ramsey II Prison Unit, is on FM 655 in Brazoria County, 33 miles south of downtown Houston.
