I just bought a used Electra mate H 612 electric reel. It seems to work fine but it's very, very noisy. The drive is taken from the motor to the reel by a chain drive and it's this chain that makes the terrible rattling.

Are they all like this (in which case it's a piece of junk) or should it have a tensioner of some kind like on a motorbike cam chain to stop it rattling?

Any thoughts anyone?

adapting my bicycle maintenance experience....

Check the chain tension..there is probably a way to loosen and slide a sprocket back and forth to do this. Make sure the chain is clean and lubed. Finally, chains wear out by stretching....and when stretched, the sprocket teeth don't mesh with the chain links like they are supposed to...this could be causing the clatter. If so you may need to replace the chain and maybe the sprockets if they are worn.

Thanks Johnboat. As an ex motorcyclist myself the first thing that I looked for was an adjustment point. I think you may be right about a new chain being the solution.
