Started out at Daylight in X-mas. Once the sun came up I realized I was fishing in some pretty dirty water. I caught fish last time with this water, but I did not see any bait so I got out and drove to the Water Treatment Plant area of West Bay.

On the way out things were looking promising with tons of bait and the faint smell of watermelon in the air. I headed off to the east once I got in the water and began looking for signs of fish. Finally saw some bait being worked over even further out and to the east from where I was. Once I got close to the area I realized I was pretty much surrounded by trout. I finally got some action on a spook jr with some rather amazing explosions on the water, I had one of those hooked for a few seconds before it pulled off. Ended the day with 8 trout to 24" only one was too small and the rest were in the 20-22" range. There are some quality fish out there if you want to work for them. I did throw some rubber in the form of tails, rubberback, and corky devil but could not get a bump. Also, I noticed about 8 other people that walked in where I did and none of them caught anything as far as I could tell. I just wondered if they walk into the bay with a spot in mind that they are going to fish and that is it. Because they could have seen the baitfish activity from where they were. I try and let the fish tell me where they are once I get into the water.

Hey PHINS, I am glad that you caught some fish. That was a good report. I guess the next time that I go fishing I am going to have to try the San Luis Pass area. I always go the opposite direction. I live in Bayou Vista and it is an easy run from my house. Like you , I always read the water and let the fish tell me where they are. Thanks for the report.

Phins,

Man I fished on monday in x-mas and managed 1 trout 2 reds and 1 flounder... Tried over by the pass but it was a boat show on Monday possibly 200 or so boats and more waders than that... I need to try the pass on a week day... Nice catch though...

its interesting

i've seen people in boats blast right thru the middle of working birds, walk right thru flounder that were literally jumping outa the water, and most recently a guy was fishing a spot that i'd just caught around 15 slot reds (all but three released) the day before. one of the biggest, heaviest slicks i've ever seen (way more than just a few fish) popped up around 30 yards upwind of him and drifted right past him. he never noticed.
