"Duck Season--2009 Opening Weekend"
It definitely wasn't ideal conditions for duck hunting but the season is only open for two months out of the year so you have to take what you get. There are a lot of birds down. On Saturday we limited out...on Sunday we got 7. Opening morning we did not see much until around 7:30 a.m. and the birds that did come to check us out acted as if they were born dodging hunters and decoys. Maybe it was the reflection of our sunglasses since it was so bright outside, I don't know what it was but they would not decoy. As the day went on they became a little less leary and started to, I wouldn't say cup up and drop in, but at least get close enough to shoot. All of our ducks on Saturday were gadwall, with the exception of 1 widgeon and on Sunday again, all gadwall with the exception of 2 mottle ducks. The flocks that did come in and give us a look were big, most of them around 10-12 in the flock, but out of that only 1 or 2 would get close enough knock-down. With the exception of the widgeon and mottle ducks, which were suicidal, most of the ducks were tough to get into the decoys, even with it being opening morning. Weather was the key factor in that. Overall, the hunting was good, lots of ducks, lots of grass. It looks like the weather will turn a little more "ducky" in the morning. We still have open dates to hunt and fish. If your looking to get in couple of days of hunting and day of offshore for tuna and wahoo, we've got'em. So far it looks like it is going to be a very good year.
